Long story, covered to an extent in the thread about removing the 90deg elbow on a TD05.
It can be done, but it is a good bit of work, and you would require pretty much the entire manifold, fuel rails etc etc.

The only thing that really stopped me doing this was the TPS. On the later cars it is three wire with fully open being the largest voltage, where as the early cars have a 4 wire (it has an idle switch which is either on (oV) or off (5v)) and the largest voltage is when the throttle is fully closed. If you can get round that (gems, link, motec ecu etc) then i don't see any big problems.
