Best route to 300hp
#1
Hello,
A friend of mine has a MY98 and he is wanting more power, he said he would like between 290-300, the car has the usual induction and exhaust mods and is looking at what to do next.
He is either going for a FMIC or an uprated(larger) turbo.
I don't know much about the spec of a the TD04 turbo but I said if its as small as is suggested on here then a larger turbo would probably be a better move as I know a few people have made 300hp with a larger turbo and a TMIC with correct fueling and increased boost.
Problem is he has got it in his head that a FMIC would be more reliable and is hoping that the FMIC would cool the charge from the TD04 enough to make the power.
Just wondering what is the limit of the TD04, how much larger say a TD05 is with regards HP potential, could the TD04 be made to make power if ran with a FMIC or is it just a too small turbo completely.
Cheers

I think you would be struggling to make more than about 280-290 BHP on a TD04 as fitted to the MY98 with or without a FMIC. You could make it with a TD04 Hybrid, but a better option would be a VF23/24/28 or a front entry TD05 either of which will comfortable flow enough air to make 300bhp. The problem is the boost control of the std ECU is setup for the TD04 and not the TD05/VF, so unless you're in a position to remap the ECU you will have to use an alternative boost control mechanism (Dawes/EBC).
You would also have to look at fueling and fit an uprated fuel pump and possibly FPR as the 380cc injector will be at there limit at about 290 BHP using std fuel pressure and maintain a safely rich air fuel ratio.
