Boost gauge sender - where can I fit it?

Posted in Interior as well but no replies so far

Have just bought an SPA dual boost/temp gauge for the scoob but didn't realise the boost sensor had to bolt into the inlet manifold and not just attach to the rubber pipe coming from it. Has anyone else fitted this type of boost sensor and how did they do it? The instructions say drill a hole in the inlet manifold but that to remove it first or swarf can enter the engine Don't fancy doing that really

Someone must be able to point me in the right direction?????

I've e-mailed 3 people that have mentioned this problem in the past so I hope I get some tips from them. I noticed on Chiarks site that the defi gauge sender is similar and has been mounted on the suspention turret with what looks like a small adaptor and hose going off to the inlet manifold rubber tube where it is tee-d off. There must be someone out there with them fitted!

I was under the impression that there was a spare threaded hole in the inlet, just for this very thing. It has a threaded blanking bolt in there at present.

I have not yet been able to find this but it is apparently on the inlet somewhere.

Replies Iain, I had a quick look around but didn't spot anything obvious, will check again. Mine is a jap import by the way not a uk one if that makes a difference.

And there is already a plug in the early inlets that is on the left next to the throttlebody... think its a 3/8ths thread.. paul can advise.. will point him here..

Yup.

There is a 1/8" NPT (actual side is more like 8mm diameter), blanking bung in the back of the rear-drivers side inlet branch.

I had to use a very big set of mole grips to undo mine as it rounded, but it's a perfect fit for the fittings on my mechanical autometer gauge.

I have a pic somewhere at home.

Right, now have two options: the 1/8th hole that pavlo suggested or scoobyparts do a fitting kit that fits straight on for a fiver. I'll try the free way first if I can Thanks again for everyones help

Found the plug on the inlet manifold but can't get the damn thing to move. Already rounded the bugger [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img] Not having much fun, can't even get the bloody intercooler of either for the oil sensor! Why do I start these things

I had the same problem.


I used big mole grips done very tight, so it flattened the end to give better purchase.

Stilson wrench would be an alternative.

Plus a good dose of WD40 an hour or so before will help.

I have done the wd40 bit, might have another go tomorrow. Leaving the intercooler til the weekend though

On the older cars it is better to have the turbo to intercooler pipe warm to aid taking it off and putting it back on. Run car untill its warm to take it off. Heat intercooler pipe up with heater before putting back on.

3 bolts and 2 Jubilee clips (1 inlet manifold other on turbo) to release intercooler for your car IIRC. Then a couple of pushes either side, tilt up, and off it should come.

will this work with the SPA sender if the manifold inlet point is 1/8 NPT?. I think all pressure senders for SPA's are 1/8 BSP.

finally got my spa fuel/boost pressure gauge. has anyone had a "T" made up with a 1/8 BSP female in the centre and hose type connections on the ends and just screwed the sender in and then placed in an existing hose from the manifold. would the hose from manifold to brake servo work for example? it is a nice large hose, internal diameter approx 10.5mm.

David, how are the boards coming? I still intend popping over to try one once I've got all this sorted out. My car is an import so all the pipes are used on top of my manifold I think uk ones had a blank though
