JGM, how about a KnockLink group buy? I've got one, thanks, but I'd recommend it to anyone with a modded motor. Forget EGT, lambda, and AFR meters - what you're looking for is knock/detonnation/pinking that might be destoying your motor.

A KnockLink simply tells you if it is, or not. Broadly speaking, it doesn't really matter what the other gauges are saying so long as the Knocklink is quiet. (Or have I got that wrong?) I'd still like and an oil temp gauage to know when I can rag it, and when I need to ease off. And boost is always interested and somtimes revealing.

But if you want a reliable Scoob, boost gauge and KnockLink will do it for you.

We could go for a discount on the Knocklink from all the suppliers, but I guess they'll be restricted by what discount they'll get shipping them from Oz.

What about approaching Scoobymania as they get their own versions manufacturered for them? It ain't the prettiest, but it's their own DIY one.

I'm sure Mike would have a lot more to play with when considering a Group Buy discount.

Perhaps someone on good terms with a supplier that everyone agrees on. I'm interested, though have no frickin' idea how to install it.

What is the sensor attached to the engine block with ? Mojo ?

We used to sell the Link items, but the problem was always in locating them.

You may think that this is a little long winded but I'll cover it anyway.

I had the Link items in my previous car (STi 5 type R V ltd), Knock and Lambda, they looked bloody awful and if you put them out the way (particularly the knock link you've defeated the object.

I cut my dashboard up and mounted them from underneath between the clocks and had done this for quite a few people, the problem was that this was not practical commercially.

The cost of me doing that took up around 5 hours all in, making it an expensive alternative, also when the steering input was wrong at the same time as being hard on the throttle/high revs (Coppice corner at Donington for example), I couldn't see the Knock link as the steering wheel (and my arms) were in the way.

So we had the remote displays made ourselves, they were cheaper than the cost of dismantling the Link item and mounting it into the dash and it could be placed in direct line of sight so that any 'knock' couldn't be missed. Understandably they were also more expensive than the very 'basic' Link item.

Knock WILL be missed if you mount this out of direct vision.
We're just changing manufacturer of these at the moment so there will be some small delay in being in stock. Also,until we've clarified the details with the manufacturer, we haven't got a new price for them eithr, previously they were circa £150.00, I'm hoping that we can do them cheaper?

I dont want to upset any suppliers here but i will sort out the sensors at no profit..
Most suppliers retail the sensors at IIRC £65.. i can get them for £30inc postage to people, maybe cheaper if bought in bulk as they could be sent direct from Bosch in germany together, saving on single postage/delivery..

So... If people pay the full price of £85 for the Knocklink and £30 for the sensor thats £115 in total, that already £30 saving off of the Retail price for both without any discount on the Knocklink.. Maybe a start??

Thanks Rob, that's a good idea. I still don't link the original Knocklink though. It's just too damn big to mount in my line of sight.

Maybe there's a compromise between something like Mike's display and sourcing the sensors direct from Bosch through yourself.

The KnockLink isn't pretty but mine is quite discretely mounted and you can always see it.

It's mounted vertically, red light at the top, just to the left of the steering column on the instruments surround, just below the fuel gauge. Simple sticky pad.

This was only a temporary fixing but it works so well it's staying there

I know there in OZ but I just put in an order for one from over there. It comes with the sensor and comes to about £60. If you get caught with Customs VAT + Import Tax is gonna bring it upto £77. The delivery isn't gonna be that much coz there aint much too em.
I have put an order in recently and am awaiting a response I sent an E-mail a while ago enquiring and they said I might be better getting it from there official supplier www.jap-innovations.co.uk maybe have a word with them.

I would be tempted to organise a group buy but thought for £10 off of mine all the hassle is not worth it..

But the main reason being I cannot get on here frequently so I cannot monitor a thread... I probably visit 3times maybe 4 a week...

Did you ever get any replies about the electronics?

As far as I can see what you would need to do would be to take the output from the sensor, pass it through a band pass filter (www.picotech.com/auto/waveforms/knock_sensor.html suggests centred at about 15KHz) and then smooth the output and use it to drive the display.

I've never tried this and would also be interested in circuit details.

Knock frequecy for the impreza is about 6.23 KHz


Detonation resonant frequency (KHz) = 1800 / (Pi x Cylinder Bore in mm)

So for : Subaru Impreza where Bore = 92mm

Det Freq. = 1800 / 3.142 * 92 = 6.23KHz

Ordered a Knock Link last week but might still be looking into making my own.. I can now test it along side the Knock Link and sell the Link afterwards..

Cheers for that info Chris.. my mate being a hardware guy should understand it better as he will be making the circuit.

Cannot find a suitable mic so far, so likely to use the knock sensor.
