Ive heard people mention porting the standard manifold rather than buying an after market hks etc for similar results. Any companies that do this and what sort of gains have people seen from it.

Also are there any inlet manifold mods appart from front entry conversions.

How costly is it to get someone to fit it for you David??

Do you also lose any of the Subaru trademark sound like with other after market manifolds?

Cheers,
Ant

Tying a boat to the quayside i think.

lol @ telboy...

Porting basically means grinding away restricions, be they in the cyl head, inlet or exhaust manifolds,

when u remove the standard manifold u will see 'soot' marks where the exhaust is 'hitting' the manifold on its way out... by grinding the metal back a little and smoothing the exit u can improve flow... and hopefully improve spool up

Cheers

and look at my torque..

Richard Im serious..

Can someone prove that threre are a set of headers that are good with every turbo...

Im seriously considering putting the turbo above the gearbox then having two up-pipes joining under the turbo..

I'm not convinced that the manifold is smaller than the head ports. The soot that people see is where the gasket space is. The gasket is bigger than the head and manifold and will leave a gap where the soot gathers thus giving an impression that the manifold is smaller.

IMHO the gain from porting is not in less restriction in the manifold but in stopping reverse back-flow into the head and therefore not diluting the next intake charge.

There is little to be gained in doing the joints either, measure the diameters and you'll see what I mean. The up pipe is not as bad as some make out, it's basically a tube within the bellows and the only problem is the small lip - but this matches to the collector anyway.

It has improved some cars in torque - where you want it really.

I haven't found a design of aftermarket header yet which didn't improve some area's while screwing other area's up. Just depends where the screwed up area is - for me, 200rpm higher spool point is well worth the gains above 4k

For sure, without a remap forget it - especially when porting the stock headers gives good results anyway. I just felt your statement was a little, uh, 'sweeping'

I ported mine by holding a gasket against the flange and then spray painted the gasket so I had something other than a soot line to aim for then smooth out all restrictions with a tct cutter in a die grinder. a few hours work..

Dave

Thanks for that. I'm tempted to give it a go and see what happens.

May buy another standard set and do those just in case I **** up.

If you could Bob that would be great. Sounds more fun than buying a set

Would try and get them done and fitted for the 1st, if it's safe to fit them before the remap?

Cheers
