Does anyone have any info about the 2 litre petrol Rover engines (I think it's a T series, from a 220 GSI on an M plate)
My mother-in-law's car is very sick. So that I can keep my Scoob to myself, I want to get it fixed reasonably quickly.
Symptoms:
There's no compression on cyl. 1 at all (1 bar reading), and the other 3 read between 12.5 and 13 bar. (checked with compression tester)
Also, the car doesn't seem to heat up, so a possible thermostat problem.
Sounds like valves to me, as the car has been run briefly very low on oil. Is this going to be an easy fix, or do I look seriously at the nice 205 GTI for sale from work?
The backbox is also blowing, but that's easy to fix.
Any suggestions will be greatfully received! Thanks.

David,
sounds like a head gasket, or as you say - valves not seating.
if it's not been heating up properly, then it could be the gasket. thats my thinking .. but I mite have that the wrong way round !
hope you manage to keep the scoob out of her hands !

Thanks. I'll see if I can find a Haynes manual that covers this engine. It's not a common model.
I was hoping it wouldn't get to the head gasket... I don't think it's used water, but it was a bit down the other day. Just what I need
The really sad thing is that the way the Rover sounds now is exactly what I want my Scoob to sound like It burbles away nicely on three cylinders and a blowing back box...

It's not my car - I just get the job of fixing it when it goes wrong!
If the weather's right I'll investigate with a socket set tomorrow.
I'll let you know if they want to sell it!
