Oil consumption

How much is "normal" for a UK MY96 with 72k on the clock?
Ideally, Id prefer the car to not use any oil, but it has done the last few months. I put in just under 1/2 a litre yesterday to take it back to 2/3 between the min & max marks. This was in about 3.5k miles, and the car will be getting an oil change shortly...
I can't see any obvious leaks, although that doesn't mean there aren't any - I didn't look too hard as it was getting dark.
