I have an early classic wrx running moderately increased 260 bhp, but with possible plans to increase this closer to the magic 300 in the future. Problem is I think my standard (?) clutch is showing first signs of slipping & will most likely need replacing soon. Can anyone suggest the best compromise between the most cost effective, reliable and durable replacement unit that'll take the extra bhp? I've heard of the AP and Helix units - are there any pros or cons whith these, or are there other alternatives that fit the bill. Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi izzy,
try Mark at Lateral Performance for a clutch.
I got one of these, it works out a better price than the ap clutch (it comes with the release bearing) and it has more clamping pressure than the ap so seemed like the way to go for me as like you I wanted more power

Currently using the AP - it has not lasted as long as the standard STi clutch.
AP - 20,000miles - quite a lot of track work - 7 quarter drags on a wet surface - it is now slipping (350bhp/300lbs ft)
Sti - 33,000miles - a lot of track work - four whole days at Santa Pod on super grippy dry surface -(320bhp/290lbs ft)
Will be using something else next time

Cheers guys! Scoobysport say they've known of some problems with the AP & suggest the Helix. I doubt I'll go for big power (famous last words anyway) & I'm more concerned with reliability & longevity. Scooby's on 56 thou miles & being an import I dont know if the clutch is original or std??
Anyone got any more thoughts.... ? Cheers again.....

I had considered the uprated EBC clutch, they claim it is harder wearing than the std clutch and it sells for only £180+vat. I used an uprated EBC on my bike and it was fine
I'll probably go for the Lateral Performance clutch, just to 'future proof' my car

PS And when I took the STi clutch off there were bad judder marks - but still plenty of wear. Oh and the other thing about the AP is that is does not quite engage correctly - if you put your foot to the floor - it struggles in reverse and first - what you need to is lift your foot slightly which seems to fix it!

Cheers guys. I'd not heard of Lateral Performance before this. It seems they're a respected option. Any idea of the all in, fitted cost & where they are / telephone no? Ta.
