What would I have to do to achieve this, I've got a standard MY99 Impreza Turbo UK wagon, should be getting whiplash money through soon so...........

As with any turbo engine theres a cheap way and an expensive way. The cheap way may turn out to be expensive and expensive way may not get up to a proper 300bhp. To do it properly may mean you may have to do without the car for while. You could of course sell it and buy an STI7 with a PPP gives you 301bhp out of the box.

Have a look what Devils had on his Car (the one recently for sale, but has now sold) not sure how much all the mods cost, but that was 300HP

Only a joke about the whiplash, my mate asked me if he could come out in the car with me every day, as its a full upper body workout down the country lanes

Depends on what you are after and you know its going to seriously affect the insurance !!!!!!!!.

If it was me it would be :

Bigger brakes (£1000) - to stop the new monster
Full sports exhaust system (£600) - helps car breathe easier
bigger turbo (£1000-£1700) - you will need to change your TD04 as IIRC it wont flow 300bhp but I may be wrong
FMIC (£1500) - safety more than anything probably more neccessary for 300+bhp
Remapped/Mapable ECU (£500-£2000) - definitely needed and the results are only as good as the mapper skill
Stronger clutch (£1000) - a good clutch to handle all this new power mind due your old one may not last to long anyway
Guages (£300-£1000) - to monitor temperatures, pressures, detting, boost levels very important IMHO. Also need to get a good make no use in buying cheap guages which are inaccurate IMHO.
Dump Valve (20p)- LOL just put this on as a joke for all the boy racers out there

And someone who know what they are doing to put the lot together for you.

The prices in brackets are just a guide but they some add up. Still havent gone internal and changed pistons, injectors etc but you probably wont need to if only want 300bhp.

Best to have a look through the technical forums as there are various project people have done.

Yep just re-read my post the TD05 is the bigger earlier turbo with more lag. So the TD04 was brought in MY97/98 ?? to reduce lag. The TD04 wont flow 300bhp IIRC but the TD05 will AFAIK.

Sparky, you can get close to 300bhp quite cheaply.

Get a hybrid TD04L turbo from Mark at Lateral Performance, £500 exchange unit, take your car to ScoobySport to fit the turbo, full-decat exhaust and ITG panel filter, then ECUtek3 remap. Around 280 bhp and getting on for 300ft/lbs of torque? I ran this set up for a few months and it was really sweet, with big, meaty low-down power. Oh, and get the exhaust headers ported while you're at it.

My UK00 is around 310bhp now, according to John Banks who did the Tek3 mapping, with the above plus ScoobySport equal-ish length headers and big top-mount-inter-cooler

Fit a Knocklink, too, just for safety.

Your standard internals, injectors, clutch and gearbox can handle this easily if not abused. I do track days, but not drag racing

You will then have a very fast car which needs a chassis to handle it. Your shocks and discs probably need replacing anyway so fit some Ledas (ScoobySport again), and two-piece discs (Godspeed) under 17in wheels.

PPS Edited to add that your standard turbo is a TDO4L and unless uprated or replaced will not flow 300bhp. Talk to Mark.

RB, you need to find a 'better' dyno if you've only got 300bhp with that lot! Pop down to PE when it gets a bit colder

Agree about the intercooler hosing

Not got the car now but it did 317 bhp

Which i thought may have been a little high.

Its not horsepower you want its torque

Hoppys advice is spot on in my opinion. You'll be stressing the TDO4L like hell to acheive near 300bhp so you'll need to change or modify it.

I don't understand this...
I do track days, but not drag racing
Track days are far more demanding on a car (inc' the engine) than a 14 seconds drag??

Saxo,

I would rather do 10 laps of k/hill than one 1/4 mile drag.

it is not just the 14 secs but waiting in the queue will put your intakes through the roof,with your dawes this could lead to det .then there is the shock of a standing start with 4wd and 250+bhp,damaging clutch,box,diffs,shafts in-fact everything but the brakes.

at track days most will do a warm up and cool down with possibly 10-15min fast.

they both stress cars to hell,you pay yer money........ and all that!

I see your point about excessive queing but often Crail can be fairly quiet (the time I was there it was a straight on affair!) and there really isn't much need for more than 1-2 full-on, mental wreck everything runs just to see what the car can do. Thereafter, I'd take it easier and enjoy things - also this will give you your 'real world' 1/4 mile time. I suppose at the end of the day someone with no mechancial sympathy could wreck a scooby at either event or on the road even!!!

I'm not too worried about the engine at 300bhp and on track days I turn the boost down, rarely using any gears other than 3rd or 4th.

Standing quarters are suicide for clutches and gearbox IMHO.

Sparky: Question is... are you into modding in a big way, for its own sake, its own satisfactions.... and its own risks? There's NO consensus on SN, that's for sure. Even allowing for the fact that the MY99 is now depreciated, some of the above lists cost plenty Advise that you look again at what Chrisp has to say.... an imported STi '03 PPP'd (check specs first) does the job first time out, is new, is improved on things like brakes, ride, roadholding. Up to you,obviously....

What we like...arguing 1/4 mile/track day merits in a bhp thread

I personally would like to go the hoppy route if 300bhp in your aim...but not much higher. Hoppy, I assume that the hybrid TDO4L has the best of both worlds in that it spools up pretty early and pretty quick but can flow quite well at the top end. That sounds like the perfect turbo for the kind of driving and performance I'd like from my car

Have a look at my For Sale posting, with the list of mods I reckon the car was hitting the 300bhp mark with ease.
Forget the TD04 hybrid, the VF series are better imho

Would you not need to upgradethe injectors aswell and maybe the fuel pump at around the 300bhp mark. What kind of duty cycles are we lookin at on the standard injectors. This is an interesting thread because I would like to take my my97 to around 300 brake.

The ECU options for me me tho are a bit more limited.....Don't mean to hijack the thread but whats the best option coz I can't do any of the home brew stuff

Saxo, John Banks recommended the hybrid TD04L to me as he had one and he knew it was what I was looking for. And at £500 exchange unit it's very cheap. It seems to run identically to the stock turbo - spools up quickly, delivers 1 bar of boost at 2,700rpm. But then it keeps on going. I was running over 1.4 bar at one time but John got the ******* and made me turn it down. I now run 1.25-1.3 bar and the KnockLink is quiet as a mouse. On John's suggestion, I use a Dawes (not different restrictors) to keep the boost at this level, ie turn it down in cold weather and turn it down even further for track days, say 1.1 bar max.

Another thing about track days vs dragging - a track day is about you, the track and the car. It's not a race. Whereas dragging is, and I'd crank the Dawes right up, not down

Cat, MY99/00 cars have 440 injectors which are okay at 300bhp. I ought to have an uprated fuel pump for safety, but the mountain of ICE I've got in the boot makes fitting a major undertaking. JB says I'm okay on the stock pump so I'm hoping he's right

Im not saying this is the way to do it...

you could up the fuel pressure on your 440s (assuming thats what they are on your year)

Turbo and FMIC are required in my book.. water injection isnt but its nice to have..

He's good at doing that Probably a good thing for engine longetivity. It sounds to me like a hybrid TDO4L would be the best turbo to keep the character of the scooby. This would allow serious cross-country performance with little lag or flat spots. I loved John's big turbo but by his own admission the car was a lot more 'point and squirt'

Re: 1/4 miles. I still can't understand this racing/wining mentality. I'm not having a go cause I've asked a lot of people about this and I knowI'm in the minority but I really don't get bothered when I get beaten! Some people are mortified if their car gets beaten but it doesn't bother me whether its on the road or at crail. For that reason I'd leave the dawes as is. I see your point though, if you don't have willpower and crank up the dawes and then factor in heat soak you'll get a brilliant 1/8 time but probably won't make the 1/4

Does the hybrid look any different to the standard TDO4L from a visual inspection? Also, what boost are you holding just before the red-line?

Hoppy had a rather permanent looking ICE install which put us off doing the fuel pump. His fuelling is just OK with it, but he would ideally have one.

I think I would try a TD05 front entry now it is actually available to the average end user first of all rather than the TD04L hybrid, but more testing to be done.

Kenny it looks identical, but please don't try the insurance trick of not declaring a hybrid - it has caught some out.

It holds boost 1000 RPM longer than the standard turbo. This makes quite a difference, but not enough of one IMHO, hence I moved on.

It is for good reason that I scare you guys with small turbos. You just cannot stop them detting once you push the boost too far. You add fuel and pull back timing until it goes like a lemon and it still dets. Diminishing returns and all that.
