how much bhp can a standard clutch take
#1
I have recently bought 96 a series Mcrae and the clutch is slipping. The cars been chipped to roughly 240 bhp iam planning fitting an exhaust and induction kit soon. Is it worth getting another standard clutch or should i get an uprated one?

pass...
I've got 345 through a geniune subaru clutch... and its ok at the moment, but If I drove it very hard it would die...
I would go to a performance clutch, just in case..

Always worth getting an uprated one, there are several available including uprated STi (not the "normal one"), AP and Helix, get an organic though as most of the others are pretty hard on the transmission and you are not likely to need anything else unless you go internal on the engine.

Eddie,
contact mark@lateralperformance.co.uk - he sells a very high spec clutch that is cheaper all in than the AP - it comes complete with a very high clamping pressure cover and the release bearing is included in the price - although he does not fit them. It will not slip at 240bhp!
I have used one and it is very good in the car.

I'll second the above!!!!
I've just had a Lateral Performance clutch fitted and was amazed at the light pedal feel for a clutch rated to 450hp & 450ftlbs torque
Also the service and friendly advice from Mark was also top notch
If your clutch is slipping, get it done sooner rather than later or you could end up with a bigger bill due to other damage ie Flywheel, gears etc.

On my MY00 turbo it started to slip in 4th gear, foot down @3000 rpm....that was with a mere VF24@1.3 bar.
Took the clutch out - it was like new, so it wasn't wear related.
So I fitted a paddle ceramic thing (with the stock preassure plate), only downside was an unsprung centre...had to learn how to use the clutch again though (it doesn't slip - period).
And the constant fear of ripping the tranny to pieces is causing me grief.
/J - that pesky fella at lateral will get more of me money later on methinks...
