Hi,

I have 1994 Subaru WRX from Japan which i'm having a problem with the gearbox.

It all started with my clutch slipping, so i replaced it with a aftermarket clutch. While changing the clutch some of the gearbox oil ran out, so we tapped it up with a different brand oil, with the intension of changing it later.

About a month later I started hearing a rubbing sound in 1st gear, so we decided to change the gearbox oil with Esso 80W - 90 gearbox oil. The next morning my car died on me while changing to 3rd gear at about
2,500 - 3,000 RPM.

Can anyone advise me on the possible causes and ways you think I can fix it.

I would appreciate a response as soon as possible.

Can't really comment but a Subaru dealer (obviously for a UK car though) will quote 7 hours for removal/strip/and refit, so not a cheap alternative

My dealer (car not drugs ) sourced a 2nd hand box and along with new clutch it came to £1600 ish

Sorry can't be of much more help, but any garage is going to want to strip it down to have a look, so you are looking at that labour charge/time if unable to do it yourself.

Good Luck

Cheam Subaru will service and work on Jap cars. They did my STi2 several times.

You should use automatic transmission fluid next time. Even in a manual.

I went to get my oil changed the other day (ST205WRC) and got told my gearbox is pressurised and they couldn't do it. Would have preferred an honest we don't want to do it than a load of bollocks like that. Considering the box has a pressure vent for oil expansion / fumes I hardly think it is pressurised. Not to mention blowing the seals.

Why ATF in a manual?.

Isn't the lubricity / viscosity of ATF is totally different to the normally used EP75W90 oil.

Cheers,

A.

I had it recommended to me some years back by a tuning house and have never had any trouble using it since. Gear changes are a lot smoother and I found it harder to beat the synchros on a Scoob which is pretty easy to do on a standard oil. I believe it foams a bit better too which is a good thing in a gearbox whereas it isn't in an engine. Normal manual oil tends to stick to the side of the box.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your response, but what do you think caused this problem with the 3rd gear striping?

And what grade oil and mixture to you recomend for the gearbox?
