The thing is now a fecking missile and I can't believe it's a 4.1 box and diff.
Adam, don't panic, looks like they changed the whole lot.

Hi folks,

As some of you know, my 96UK recently ate it's 3.9 UK gearbox so I took the opportunity to go for an STi one.

Well, after some time a decent STi type RA came into the local scrappy's and I put my name down for the box, presuming it was a 4.44 (?)

When, the guy took it off the car he apologised and said although the car was an RA it had a WRX box and diff and he hadn't realised and did I still want it as it was a 4.1?

I reluctantly agreed and had the thing fitted.

Now, to the point. The thing is now a fecking missile and I can't believe it's a 4.1 box and diff. If it is, God help anyone with a 4.44. I was running 1.5 bar, but I've dropped it to 1.2 and it feels quicker!

I'm doing 2000rpm @ 40mph and 4000 rpm @ 80mph in top gear. The thing will pull from less than 20mph in 4th quite merrily. My old box would never have done that.

Have I got the RA or WRX box or what? Anyone help?

Cheers

Rich

Cool

Rich - If it's any help Mines a WRX RA (non STi) and the gearing is the same as you describe. Nice thing is, it pulls like a train all the way to 8250 rpm in top!
Enjoy the missile!

Hi Rich,

Glad the box finally arrived..... my WRX pulls 4000rpm @ 80mph. However i've no idea if this was ever changed while it was living in Japan...... probably a 4.1 tho.

Cheers guys.

I can't believe the difference it has made to the car. Driving Nick's car now with the UK box is totally different. 5th in mine is exactly like 4th in his.

Can't wait to get the car Linked now and those 550s on.

The full 3" exhaust is UNBELIEVABLE. For those coming to Well Lane...prepare to have your ears bleed!

Cheers

rich there is a problem here.

I presume they didnt take off your rear diff to change its final drive.

So if they fitted a ra centre diff with a 4.1 final drive then it must have been a vearly box, and they must have changed your rear crownwheel and pinion.

Who did you buy it from and are you sure they know what they are doing? as otherwise your centre diff will be doing a serious amount of work.

It sounds to me like you have normal short gearing first to fith, ie. same as type r type ra and 22b, and also has a 4.44 final drive too.

Assumign you have that final drive on your rear diff, then all will be fine. Otherwise, expect lots of heat to be coming from your centre diff.

well spotted paul,

thanks!

20mph per 1000rpm (or 19.8 as it should be) does sound like a 4.44 to me though on standard type r gearing.

Just to clear up,

Yes it was box and diff that were swapped off the same car.

I'm sure it must be a 4.4 as I can't possibly imagine a shorter box on a road car, it would be silly.

I'm gonna get some more accurate speed@rpm readings in all gears to be sure.

Cheers

So looking at most of the posts above (inc. mine i think it's three) that have early wrxs we get 80mph at 4000rpm in fifth.... does that mean we all have the type r (4.4) gearbox not the 4.1 wrx gearbox???????

After a few more tests last night,

80mph crossover with the WRXs might just be a coincidence.

At 100mph in 5th it's doing around 5500rpm and the car absolutely maxes out at 130mph (7000rpm). Think WRXs do more than that.

Cheers

Rich

Talking

Bear in mind that the RA (not sure about the 22B & TypeR) had an 8000rpm redline and the 4.44/19.8mph per 1000rpm would be a top speed of 158.4 at the redline. At 7000rpm this would be 138.6 so you're in the ball park.....

I wouldn't rely on your speedo being accurate enough to calculate your ratios.

Early WRXs usually had a 0.825 5th and a 4.1

Early WRX RAs have a 0.972 5th, again with a 4.1. Early STi RAs iirc have the same box but mated to a 4.4 - tad nippy its fair to say.

JDM 22b/type Rs have 0.825 5th and a 4.4 final drives.

Also later imports (not sure about the earlier ones) have 1-1 drop gears, uk cars have 1.1-1 iirc

These are just a few variants, to be really sure you have to open it up.

rich,

it isnt possible for the ratio to change halfway through and likelihood is your speedo is out at the top.

ie. you cant have 130 at 7k and 80 at 4k.

I still think 80 at 4k is probably closer to the mark.

Matt only post version 3 sti ras had 8k redline. wrxs had 7.5 k at that point, and pre version 3 all had 7 k redline!

My fault for not being precise.

On closer inspection it's actually doing 78 @ 4000 and it will JUST do over 130 in top but I didn't want to bounce it off the limiter in 5th, so I wussed out about 5mph early, so it looks like it's around 19.5mph/1000 rpm in top

78mph@4000
and
136.5mph@7000

Cheers

Hi Rich: Not sure on your wheels and tyres and different tyres and the ware on them slightly affects the gearing so I have guessed on 215x40x17". Let me know the actual and I will recalculate including tyre make and model.
Assuming from what you have told me it is 4.444:1 diffs.
That can be phisically verified if necessary.
1st gear = 3.083 = 36mph @ 7k
2nd 2.062 54mph
3rd 1.545 72mph
4th 1.151 97mph
5th .825 135mph
I have noticed that the corelation between speedo and rev counter on most Scoobies is not linear but it stabilieses in the mid range.
Is this about right?

Hi Harvey,

My wheels are 18" and the tyres are 215/40 x 18 and the tyres are half worn all round.

Those figures look there or thereabouts though. I'll go out tonight to verify them.

At only 1.2 bar (for safety til I get new clutch and flywheel run in) I gave a Maserati 3200 the shock of his life last night
Look in this Thursday's Autotrader, it'll probably be in there!

Roll On Jan and Link, big injectors and 1.5 bar again

Cheers
