Starting a Clutch thread (exciting eh)

I was wondering if people could state what model they own and what milage the clutch went and what replacement they bought with any reccomendations etc.

Right i'l kick off:

I have a fairly heavily modified STI V5 (330bhp, 350 ft pounds Torque) which has nearly reached 41 thousand miles. The clutch (standard STI) is starting to slip (I think.... it's always hard to tell at the beginning.
Do I go for AP or Helex or ??????

Neither

Go for one from lateral performance. When you compare the price bear in mind the LP one includes a new release bearing, the helix and AP don't.

I believe there are a few options that can reduce the price too.

Email mark, go to www.lateralperformance.co.uk to get contact details

Used a 4 paddle AP Racing clutch on my old Impreza. Was used for Hillclimbing and sprinting. Regularly did 5500RPM standing starts.

Standard clutch lasted all of 10 mins of sprinting. AP clutch lasted a season, which to be honest I thought was excellent.

Only issue was that the paddle clutch wasn't exactly what you could call good for day to day use.

Where did you get the Helix from and how much? (If you don't mind me asking)
Mail me off line if you prefer.

Thanks

Durleydude,

BHP isn't really the issue here, but your torque is.

I believe that the MAX torque rating on the AP, and Helix organic clutches, is 350ftlbs, and according to your quoted figures, you're already there.

Both companies will offer a "paddle" clutch option, which will have higher ratings.

There is another option available. You can either find the details on the ScoobyShop, under "Engine", or please email me for more details.

Can i just shed some light on some things mentioned above which are incorrect (cant remember who posted them).

The stats for helix and AP are as follows :-

AP 310lb/ft torque 600kg clamp load does NOT include release bearing in price.

Helix 315lb/ft torque 700kg clamp load, DOES include release bearing in price.

AP do offer a slightly more expensive clutch with cerametallic faced driven plates (though only recommended for competition use), then the next option up is twin plate (and thats only rated to 350lb/ft).

I havent got the figures for next step up for helix but i hope thats useful for you.

Lat Perf uprated GEARKIT is circa £2k, the CLUTCH is £450ish inc bearing, check the scoobyshop for proper price.

Bear in mind that this clutch, while capable of 450ftlbs of torque, is still a regular clutch, and drives just like standard, but without the slip.

£2k for a CLUTCH.....JEESE, for that, I'll throw in a billet flywheel, and I'll polish your car ( I charge £1259.75 inc' VAT, for car polishing

£446.50 Inc' VAT, and delivery. Kit includes new release bearing, as Paul has mentioned.

Regardless of whether you consider my clutch, or an alternative, if you REALLY have 350ftlbs, I would check the torque rating of both the standard AP, and Helix clutches. Neither of them are rated to 350ftlbs.

Mark.
