Question

Is the standard UK gearset any different, in terms of strength, compared with the sti one?

Just out of interest

no no no.
was not thinking of changing, was merely trying to find out wether they are the same as a uk one, because Trout and Harvey have big power IMHO.

If they are running standard gearsets, which i think trout is, then i know my gearset will cope with what i have, assuming its the same strength as the sti.

However, it appears it is not, so will have to be steady.

Tony, cheeky, i am sure David will acknowledge that i did do quite alot of the work with him, i just have more confidence doing things to the car, if he is there!

Tony...

The work was done 50/50 by us... I couldnt have done it all myself without steven... nor could he...

We seem to manage to work ok together.. and just get on with it..

Depends on how many cans we drink though!

Diff is too heavy for my liking..

Steven,

compare the torque figures before you judge the strength of the gears.

Just pulling your leg Steven.... it can easily be seen you doing some work in some of the pictures on your non DIY FMIC thread . Think the tools need to be upgraded a bit tho .

It seems that "driver technique" has more to do with gearbox longevity, than anything else, to a point.

I know guys with pretty stock UK cars who are on their 2~3 box, same for STi's. I also know guys running circa 350bhp on the stock box quite happily.

It would also seem that the integrity of the gears, is somewhat inconsistant.

Problems with shifter forks, syncro's, and selector rods, are generally due to the poor timing of gear changes, being overly aggressive, etc'.

Stripping gears, can be attributed to the power of the engine, unless someone finds 1st, instead of 3rd, or 2nd, instead of 4th

Steven,

the gearsets are pretty much the same in the STi and UK cars. I have seen posts that say different - however I went through the process of sourcing cogs and all the checking we did indicated that they were the same. In fact the 3/4 gear subassembly is identical, with same part numbers.

The final drives and drop gears vary, but basic cogs the same.

This may be different in the RA, I am talking about Sti V 4-doors here.

Trout

PS Notices Pavlo having a dig at my weedy torque figure
