Front entry TD05..... who's done what?
#1
Im in the process of considering the best way forward to mod a MY93 WRX TD05 to front entry and need to get more info.
This is probably the most famous front entry early car.... think it's some rally car or something :
There seems to be two options.... fit a MY97-98 inlet manifold and go from there or raise the existing manifold. It appears that raising the manifold would be the easier of the two (thanks to everybody who's given me info so far) but what would achieve the best results?
There's quite a bit of info dotted about the BBS (22B.com too) but it would be good to get all the info in the same place for future reference.
So people who've done this (Pat, Pete Croney etc, Andy F), what are you tips, recommendations etc.
Cheers,
Tony.

Hmmmm.... that could persuade me! It's half the price of the one i was think about. It'll need a bit of thought on the end tanks tho. Are you going to alter these on yours now your not in a rush?
I take it you can do these for the normal inlet... not reversed?

Unless you've AC too...and even then phase 2 manifold (for those afflicted ) shape doesn't lend itself to having a simple plate welded on the front
Only way I can see to do it is to move the battery out of engine bay and have a very long belt for the compressor....plus some serious mods to the inlet.
What size core David?

Turbo Dynamics can machine the intake housing for you and it arrives back with a flowed trumpet all done to incredibly high standards. I think it costs around £300.
You then need a 97/98 inlet manifold, throttle body and the water rail that connects the two heads (this sits lower than the early one). You can't use a 99-> manifold as these don't have a separate ISC and the inlet ports or offset, left to right.
You will also need the later power steering pump and the intake pipework.
The throttle position sensor from the 97/98 is wired differently, but you can rewire it so that your ECU gets the correct voltages.
When we do the manifold swap, we normally re-plumb the fuel rails so that the two sides run in parallel, rather than all four injectors running in series.

Pete... i've just received my back copy of CCC mag with your old Ra track car. I actually bought it to see the inlet manifold/front entry mod... bit disappointed that it only has one engine shot . I beleive you've done this for a few customers tho.... if so what sort of figure are we talking for the whole job (including all the parts, labour etc.) You can mail me off line if you want @ anthony.tonkin@austin.co.uk

Not trying to hijack this thread in anyway, just trying to get even more info in one place.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has replaced the TD04 in a later car with a (modified to front entry) TD05.
Everyone seems to go for VFs or hybrids based on VFs and yet some very well respected names have repeatedly said that the TD05 is a very good turbo for the EJ20? Is it availabilty? Worries about the conversion costs? Lag?

If you are getting a later water pipe that runs across the block, make sure you get one with the 2 temp senders on it, for teh guage, and the ecu. Some later ones only have one temp sender. If you do get the water pipe, then chances are wires will also have to be altered to reach the temp sensors.
Some of the wiring loom may end up quite tight anyway when converting to straight entry.
