Question

On a 93WRX. When I tried to decat it recently, the sensor wasnt going to budge from the old cat. Is it a lambda sensor, and what would happen if I de-catted, bunged the hole in the new downpipe and left it unplugged?

Cheers

Andy.

Thumbs down

AFAIK on your car the Lambda sensor is in the down pipe.
Unplug it and you are going nowhere.
Apply lots of penetrating oil, leave over night, reapply nextmorning and with a tight fitting spanner and lever it will come off.

Cheers Harvey

Unforch the nut stripped off the sensor last time I tried getting it out, so its deffo staying where its put.

In essence then, a decat is going to involve me getting a new sensor I guess. Hope they aint too much!!!!

if you've just taken the corners off of the nut then get a spanner that grips the flats on the nut. (Metrinch or something like that... IIRC do some)

If you've graunched it totally, then it's new sensor time. They aren't that cheap unfortunately

Graunched it. The nut came away from the sensor rather than round off. Bugger! I'll be off to the wanted section then I guess.

Cheers

New lambda is about £100 or just over. Do not pay more. There is no guarantee a second hand is any good unless taken from a crashed car and then it is still a chance. I have one here but it is from my STi 6 and it would be necessary to check they were the same.

Same sensor broke on my 95 wrx.... I was told its a heat sensor, i unpluged it from loom and all was ok...

Im sure on older models the lamba sensor is in the manifold.

Yep.... the sensor your talking about is NOT a lambda sensor. On the early cars this is in the exhaust manifold (looking in the engine bay it's bottom left corner). The one your talking about is a temp sensor for the cat. If you cut the wires back there should be no problem as many have found.... mine came out nice and easy so i put it in the downpipe 'cos there was a hole for it. I would worry if you can't get it out tho.

YAY!!!!!

So I can just bung up all the holes on the dpipe and leave the heat sensor unplugged. Do I need to do anything else to the car or will the ECU take care of any power increases due to a freer flowing exhaust system?

What sort of power gains could I expect from a decat? The can ran 263 bhp/245 lb ft or PE's road, with some sort of aftermarket exhaust, jetex filter and PE replacement ECU with the cat in place. I heard gains of 10-15 bhp, but is this realistic in practice? Has anyone done a back to back RR run ex-cat?

I paid about £180 for a new Magnex dpipe. About right?

Cheers again guys.

My car has the hole in the downpipe bunged up, works fine, MY94 WRX. 10-15 is probably all you will get, it's about all I got anyway from a scoobysport one.

Talking

I'd be more than happy with 10, 15 would be seriously sweet. Where else can you get so much bhp for so little money. I love these cars..........

Agreed with Tone. When I decatted my car, I had that wire dangling. TurboSteve kept asking me what that blue wire was for..
