Question

I have a 1998 Forester T/tb and am about to replace the original downpipe with a HKS de-cat one.
Am I correct in thinking that I cannot replace the original heatshields around the HKS pipe because the original pipe is fitted with brackets that the shields bolt on to and I know that there are no brackets on the HKS?
Would exhaust wrap be a good idea?
To make the answer easier, for Forester read Impreza, as the system is virtually identical.

Thanks
Brian

Brain,

I'll answer you!

I don't think you can refit the heatshields as the section is completely different to standard. Have a look at the way it exits the turbo for instance. Yes, you're going to get some more cabin noise but hey, why did you buy the de-catted DP ? It's not bad noise afterall??

Lagging - yeh, i've heard a few people to this as it helps to keep the under bonnet temps down. Most people don't bother and have no problem.

Hope this help. SS downpipe fitted without heatshields or Lagging for over 6 months.

Steve.

Brian,
Did you find a cat lurking down the centre section or are you going to do a swap come MOT time?

Hi Nick,

Yes, found a cat in the centre section and decided on downpipe change. HKS pipe is sitting in the hallway awaiting fitment. I think I may have solved the MOT problem with a friendly tester !!

Brian I have a SS downpipe and so far have only cooked the clutch fluid as it's reservoir is directly above the down pipe.It may be wise to lag it just to stop changing the clutch fluid!!!

When I had no heat shield on mine I managed to cook the clutch fluid a couple of times, since fitting the heat shield I have not had this problem since.

Thanks for those comments.
My inclination is to wrap the pipe as the benefits appear to outweigh the noise factor, which, to be honest, I can live without.
I am more interested in extracting bhp rather than decibels
