Cool

A bit of market research really...

is there much interest in an LPG / CNG conversion for the WRX and the non turbo?

I'd be very interested in hearing your comments / suggestions either in this post, or mail me offline....

cheers

Nick

It should be equivalent of over 100RON!!!!! All other conversions are IIRC.

There is interest in anything that would help with running costs...

I've only heard of one successful conversion so far, which can only run with standard boost, with a 60l tank comes in at £1650+vat.

Dunk,
thanks for that - who supplies that kit?

Makalu
chiark's right - the effective RON will be higher. We should be able to engineer this to give a performance increase.

Wouldn't advise converting a turbo, non turbo's are ok but not entirely trouble free

Loads of cars have blown up, not recommend for high compression high bvoost turbo engines. I also knwo a guy with a 4.0 jeep who had a engine let go becuase of LPG conversion. Great idea if they offer a 5 year warranty IMHO

The kit is Prins Sequential Gas multipoint injection.
Contact Stuart at sales@gas4cars for further info.

No connection etc, just interested but don't want to be a guinea pig !

As chrisp has said, not really compatable for high compression engines, have heard of cases of engines blowing up. We have converted a few Subarus but were advised to avoid turbo's at all costs!

I don't see why it shouldn't be possible, but the cost of setting the engine up correctly would probably be the limiting factor. With a fully featured, re-mappable ECU it should work absolutely fine. Get the fuelling, boost and igniton right and your laughing. I think the problem is that most LPG kits only come with basic fuelling controls which don't satisfy the needs of a high boost motor.

I did enquire with a company some time ago with regards to a LPG conversion kit for Turbo Impreza's. If I remember rightly it was a multi point injection kit with a self learning ECU that required minimum set up time once installed. However the company is yet to get back to me after over 3 Months, so I don't think they feel it is possible somehow.
The rating of LPG fuel is IIRC 114 Ron but with it having a different flame front speed giving 80% of the power of petrol, which I think means it ignites at a different rate to petrol, but LPG is I think delivered into the combustion chamber alot cooler than petrol so might be able to prevent knock from occuring. This is all from my memoery so could be wrong.
I will send them another email and see if they reply this time.

My Dad had his 4.0L Ford Explorer done ages ago and the only problem he has had is finding somwhere to the buy the stuff. His company has had a shed load of Saabs done too with no problems. I was thinking of havin my Sport done, but it's for sale now so no point.

Thumbs up

I'd do it if it worked - with my mileage at 40k / year it would save 1,000's.

Anyway, couldn't the cat's come out due to the reduced emissions and make up for the losses in power?

:-)
