I shift from 4th to 5th at 5000 RPM and it crunches everytime. any idea why or any idea what the remedy is?

Banzai,

Will probably be a failed/ worn synchro. My STI 5 has had 2 gearbox rebuilds, 1 with STI 5 internals and 1 with STI 4 internals which are supposed to be stronger. Each time the problem reappeared after about 7000 miles.

What gearbox oil are you using - changing to a good synthetic such as Silkolene Silktran Syn 5 can noticeably improve things.

Almost certainly 5th gear Syncro gone. Had mine done about 5000 miles ago and is a common type-r fault

Agree with Chris- try some decent gear oil in it before you do anything drastic as it can make a hell of a difference.

would recommend redlien high shock over the silkolene, from experience.
