a dump valve is a device that dumps the boost presure from the turbo and stops the turbo from stalling and potentially damaging it. Your car (and most turbos) have a re-circulating dump valve that vents back into the air intake somewhere. What your mate is probably advising is that you get a vent to atmosphere dump valve (made by forge, bailey etc) that will make your car make a tsshh noise when lifting off the throttle when on boost (kind of like airbrakes noise )

Hope that helps you

Lol Light sabre noise RB5 ray is the man who knows all about light sabres as apparently he was in star wars.
Some cars run better with dump valves some don't. Many tuners totally remove them and some swear by them. Most people seem to think that the removal of the dump valve gives better performance but your turbo will wear quicker. Also be careful in your selection of valve as this will be dependant on your air flow meter and can cause idling problems

Unhappy

So just to re-cap:-

1. it will make a tssssssssssssh sound

2. It may or may not protect your turbo !

3. eeeeeeeeeeer, there isnt a 3.

So is there a point to having one of these.

PS I also have a MY01 WRX

Sorry to sound so thick, but pardon the pun, it seems to be a lot of noise about nothin.

The dump valve should also help with lag as the turbo is kept spinning thus preventing the turbo from having to spin up from low speeds each and every time you lift of the throttle etc.
Try a twin piston type which is adjustable as your car has an air flow meter or you may experience some idling problems due to the DV leaking air into the system whilst at low rpm

Disagree - without a dump valve a quick gear change leads to immediate boost (turbo has slowed, but not stalled yet, because it's spinning against the air to maintain your boost). Try it

Of course, don't expect the turbo to last that long - dump valve's purpose is to extend useful turbo life.
