...now makes an (intermittant?) noise like a failed fan bearing. (I'm told that this is quite a loud noise)

I've only had this described to me, and I'm going to look at the car this afternoon. Could I be looking at something like a big end failure?

Sorry for the lack of detail, but as yet, I've not run the car to hear it.

Oh well, I'd better get some oil and fill the thing up and see if it goes quiet....

I used to own a K plated 220 GTI (with the rover 2.0ltr) my advice is forget it! Lovely car when running loads of money and grief when not. 40k mls = water pump bearing worn = thrown timing belt = burnt out valves x2. £700. 6 months later ex wife ran it dry of oil = another two burnt out valves!!! Never the same again!!!

I would say no!!!!

 

It sounds a lot better now the new oil has gone in. Runs quietly, with just an injector tick, so I think my mother in law (it was her car, not mine) has got away with it this time.

Will have to wait and see if it leaks more oil or burns it...
