This happened on the way home last night, tried a few people local to Crawley but they can't look at it til Friday or next week... any suggestions on where to take it (MY96 import)

Take a look at the wire from the temperature sensor - if it's shorting or disconnected (can't remember which) then the ECU will think the engine is too hot and turn the fans on.

the wiring will be ok it's the sensor itself changed loads of the bloody things bit of a snot as well if the engine is hot!

i used to have 94 wrx import shortly after buying the car the check engine light came on and fans would come on - car drove normally- took it back to the garage and it turned outv to be one of the temperature sensors on the cooling system they replaced it and all was well .

All fixed, replacement water temp sender fitted.. £100 - phew.
