My MY98 has now passed 2 MOTs with just the OEM center, didn't bother getting it hot first and it passed with ease.
Changing the center once a year I can cope with but the DP, nah!

i am wondering wether to get a scooby sport back box and downpipe for my RB5. i want to unleash some of that power thats locked up by those flamming cats and make the most of that spine tingling boxer zorst note. will i pass an MOT with the small cat in the centre section or would i have to put the original DP on every year to get through the MOT.

Centre only? Maybe, if you're lucky & it's working properly & the engine/exhaust is hot
Or swap the DP over come MOT time. It takes a while, but leave the initial change (the $%^&£%^& one when everything has seized ) up to someone else, then just remove the heatshield & jiggle the 5 bolts on that connect the turbo to the DP every 3-4 months so they don't seize & it should be easy to swap back MOT time.

Yes it will as long as the centre cat is in good condition. But, I'd say the same thing if your car was 3+ years old and still had both cats.
My RB5 passed easily with a TSL downpipe, OEM catted centre and STI backbox. See for yourself here
I never bothered warming the car up. Just drove to the station with my full decat, they swapped over the *very* cold centre (stored in the loft) and let the car idle until the engine oil was up to temperature.
**** changing the downpipe, that's far too much hassle.
