Gearbox
Hi guys, ive just bought a STI5 type r coupe and im having some trouble with reverse gear. The car keeps jumping out of gear when the clutch is fully lifted, it does not do it in any forward gears, the car is totally standard apart from the 5th gear has been modified for motorway crusing. Anybody came across this before??
Thanks.
Thanks.
Hi,
How many miles it done?
I'm by no means an expert but You could check your gear linkage for wear or damage, but could be syncromesh or selector forks which you'd have to get someone to sort.
You might be lucky and it's the linkage so don't pannick....yet
Don't know if it's poss to adjust it if it is the linkage??

Do this one check before you do anything
Check the level of fluid in the gearbox, if its low then top it up as this can cause gears to jump, if its been doing it for a while though you may need a new linkage

Had exactly the same problem on my UK MY99.
One of the seals in the gearbox had decided to disintergrate, this meant that one of the shafts had some play in it, so making it jump out of reverse. All it needed was this seal replaced and hey presto fixed.
Got it done under warranty so no idea how much it would be.

It is possible that a seal has gone on the box.
It is also possible that there is a problem with the 5th gear selector hub assay, as this is also used to select & hold reverse gear. There is a syncro on reverse on your car so it could be that it is worn or broken, although it would be very unusual as I have never seen these have a problem before.
It seems quite unlikely that there is a problem with the gear lever as there is no adjustment externally & if there were a problem with bushing ETC. then you would expect to have a problem with some or all of your forward gears.
It would be interesting to know what mod was done to 5th (for cruising) as this could have a direct affect on Reverse.
If you end up having to fix the fault, then it would be cheaper to have your box repaired as opposed to buying a new/second hand one. 5th/Reverse-gear selector assay can be accessed without removing the gearbox, by removing the propshaft & then removing the transfer casing. This is generally a much quicker way of working with this part of the box. However if there is a problem with Reverse gear or the Reverse idler itself then the box must be removed, as these items are inside the main casing.

The only thing I can think of, to change 5th, is that the 5th out of a 4dr, or UK box has been fitted, .738, instead of the .814, but this wouldn't give 185mph anyway, more like 174mph at 8k. Still, bit quicker than the 159mph of the typeR, if your engine can pull it.....
