Can anyone tell me where I might find the oil way that I need to remove the plug from to connect my oil temp probe, as I currently have the probe in the sump plug, but have been told this isn't the best place, as cool air when driving can confuse the reading. I travelled along the motorway this morning and did notice the oil temp. drop by nearly ten degrees while driving along.

Which side of the engine is number three cylinder ? Front or back ? Has anyone got ant pictures ?

If you stand at the drivers side and look at the gap between the turbo and the inlet manifold, straight ahead you will see a blank alan key nut just under the intercooler. This is the one AFAIK.

Follow the HT leads from the spark plugs to the black block onto of manifold just above where aicon pump is and you will see they are numbered, that is the numbering of the pistons AFAIK.

Phil,

you can get the threaded part from Subaru dealers which will allow you to screw some (Defi for sure) oil temp probes straight in here once you've removed the above mentioned blanking plate.

I found getting to the plug was a complete SOB!! You gotta move the intercooler out of the way and remove all the induction hoses that get in the way. When you can actually see the thing you'll find that there's very little space to turn an allen key - chances are that the plug will be on pretty tight. It's not a nightmare job like changing a turbo but it sure as hell is fiddly! I found the intercooler was a pain to shift and also moving one of the breather pipes for access for a pain. Best of luck.

sorry geezer - I had intended to document the whole process but when I was actually there I was so frustrated that I forgot. You're right about not being able to see it - you got to remove loadsa stuff first. I was seriously doubting it actually existed but I had a mate on the phone with the workshop manual telling me that it is actually there. If you can get the turbo outlet hose off it's pretty much straight down and an inch or two toward the front of the car from there - ie. not very obvious to sday the least!!

Thanks for all that information, how long should it take. As I said the gauge and probe is already fitted (in the wtong place) so it just re-route the cable and fit the probe in the correct place

taking tmic off and the turbo pipe takes about 3minutes. Dont use an allen key, use a ratchet socket with an allen key head in it.

Like others said, take off the IC and it's mounting braket near the base of the turbo, pull off the large oil breather pipe and you should see a round plug with an allen face. This is in there really tight so you won't **** if with an allen key, you'll need an allen socket to budge it.

Don't forget when refitting to use PTFE tape on both the internal and external threads.

Guarantee mechanic will doubt if it exists - remember even with the intercooler and its bracket out of the way it still looks like it doesn't exist. It hides under the breather pipe.

but I cant remember what to do with the OE oil pressure (useless) sensor!

I know the DEFI pressure one fits into the OE hole at the front and the temp one goes in as above - but what do we do with the OE one ? & the wire that connects to it?
Do you just leave it? or wire it to earth / +12v ?????

I just unclipped the sensor from the cable and tie wrapped the cable up out of the way. Sensor in boot of car somewhere

Yes that's correct, i was a little concerned there wasn't a low pressure oil light anymore, but the gauges has one. Just make sure you tell anyone that is going to borrow / use the car
