P1 run on Unleaded for 2 years!!!!
#1
Hi,
I am buying a P1 which has been run on unleaded since new. Car is 2 years old and done 40,000 miles. Owner says car has never been driven hard and tyres, general condition and garage where car serviced confirm this.
Will car be OK, or are there problems stored up waiting to happen?
If OK should I run car on SUL or UL and can I change between them if cannot find SUL.
Any guidance apreciated

Ensure the only thing you put in it now is constant EITHER Super or Optimax - my personal preference is optimax - but that is only my opinion.
It wouldn't harm having the ECU reset so you know your off on an even keel after all that cr@p that the previous owner has put through it - I would personally hit the daft git. or gittess !
Shouldn't have caused any harm though - just would have never realised the true p1 ooooomph!
Lucky boy - P1 very nice indeed.

If it was me, then I would not buy the car.
They are supposed to run only on 97RON minimum, and if you do have to use 95RON then try to drive off boost.
Mine detted the only time I put in NUL during the fuel strike. Fortunately I only did about 100 miles on this fuel.
What exactly is the definition of being driven hard ?
If you do have to buy this car, then I would insist on the Extended Warranty being included.

Oh boy!! Help.............!!!
I have paid a deposit on this car and in process of having number plates transferred over.
A bit of conflicting advice here.
Car is being bought from a garage(not Subaru). The car is the garage owners and I am doing a P/X
Car has been serviced by Subaru since new and all service history checks out. Car still has 1 year of Subaru warranty to run.
I have driven the car and all seems OK.
Should I ring a Subaru dealer and get the official line?

Firstly, what sort of owner would run a P1 for 40k on UL? Not one who's conscientous or understands anything about the engines surely. What sort of UL have they used? Guess they wouldn't admit to supermarket stuff....
Second - it's run by a garage owner, so would be very easy for them to improve the general condition so it looks well cared for.
Nowadays it's very easy to improve a cars aesthetics to look well cared for.
Personally, I wouldn't touch one that's been run purely on unleaded - you've no idea what the long term effects will be.
Bear in mind it's essentially a Jap import STI engine designed to run on 100ron.
Theres plenty of P1s out there - if it was me I'd find another.

Thanks for responses.
Called 5 Subaru garages (that come well recomended through this website) and all say the same. Can run on 95RON with no long term adverse effects apart from less power as ECU will compensate. Local garage said fill with SUL and they will reset ECU FOC. called Prodrive but not in on a Saturday
Will run car on SUL from now on
Richi I agree but a bit harsh for my first ever posting on this site and was only after some help.

Uk cars are supposed to be safe on 95Ron. I'm sure there are loads of Scoobs which have been run on 95 from new, and have suffered no ill effects. Mine, however isn't one of them! 97 all the way.

Sorry to but in, but this is a class example of why I hate handing over my car to any (including Subaru) Garages. They are so incompatent and dont give a fukc, you have phoned certain garages up and asked them about a well known issue with Imprezas and theres 10-15K at stake and each of them said it should be OK yet in the first Page of the Manual it advises not to use 95 !
Unbelievable !!
I am a tight arsed scotch bas, and if I was spending that kinda money there would not be the slightest of doubts in my mind and if there were then I would look at another car and keep doing so until Ive found a car with no doubts attached.
I take it a Warrenty would be coming with the car?

when i bought my p1 garage said it was fine to run on unleaded -no problems, since joining scoobynet and having a chat to john banks now run optimax-it seems to run slightly smoother
if you look at the p1booklet mine says super unleaded but 95ron can be used but expect less performance
