Tone it down a bit (SS DP+BB)

I have an SS DP+BB+Dawes on my MY00 wagon.
The downpipe is lagged, I have a layer of carpet underlay in my boot. I also have the boost soundproofed with the sticky heavy foil surfaced stuff (technical eh )
I am beginning to think that it's just a wee bit loud (well for the wee 8 month year old in the back ) after putting on the downpipe. Don't get me wrong I like a bit of rumble just wanting a bit less (not quiet though).
I take it that the noise is in the main being generated by the back-box?
Is there anything I can do to my current setup to tone the noise down a bit more?
Also I have heard a Prodrive BB and it's VERY quiet, how does a Magnex compare with the SS/Prodrive?
Is the Prodrive/Magnex pipe very restrictive?
I assume that most people would swap a SS BB for a Magnex? May look to swap (locally in Scotland) if this is the case.
Any ideas?

You could always get a centre section with resonator, or, put the standard centre back on, I'm considering doing this on my saloon with full SS system, it get a bit waring(?) on longish journeys, also, it might even pass the mot like that, so it could be a double bonus.

reading the post it looks like you still have the standard centre on. Your youngster is obviously not tuned to the sound of the scoob. My 2 boys, 19months and 4months old, absolutly love it. The sound rocks em off to sleep in no time. The eldest one actually points at scoobs and says daddy. Wife says he thinks every subaru is Dad.

My SS "quiet" backbox (did you know they are available) is fine with an unlagged DP, bit of dynamat in the boot floor (estate) made a noticable difference, fine for motorway driving, my 2 year old kid sleeps no problem.

yes, I knew there was a quiet version of the SS BB.
My kid also sleeps in the car and the wife doesn't mid the burble All I want is a slightly quieter burble with no/minimal expense .. just my preference really.
It looks as though I've done all I can with the current set-up. I don't want to go back to the standard BB or noise (rules out Remus I think - too quiet).
Waiting to hear Magnex/prodrive experiences.
So BTTT.

My experiences:
1. OEM dp, OEM centre with cat cut out & straight piece welded in place, Remus bb - nice sounds, deeper burble than standard but not loud. Had people saying 'wow,& I thought Remus was really quiet'
2. OEM dp, cc as above, Scoobymania bb - too loud for the missus & she said too loud for our 7 week old. I loved it. It turned heads in the street. I had loads of comments about it sounding like a WRC! Really deep burble. Did have to crank the stereo up a couple of notches.
3. Currently, Performance Subaru dp, Prodrive centre, Prodrive bb - the quietest setup I've had. It is deeper than standard & sounds sweet when really hot. I might try a non-resonated cc next, or the Scoobymania bb with the Prodrive cc to try & get a bit more sound without the wife thinking there's a hole in the exhaust (like she did with no.2 setup! Doh.)
Hope this helps.

All this stuff about Prodrive being restrictive. Are Prodrive not THE specialist Scooby performance bits? I'm not looking for massive power gains, but I doubt the Prodrive stuff is THAT restrictive. My Scoobymania bb was 3", I think the PD is 2.5/2.75"? Is that really going to make a difference? I've been told that you need a bit of restriction to .......something or other..... otherwise the...... I don't know. F**ck me. Anyone enlighten me?

I have a standard system on MY97 apart from a WR Sport back box. It is lovely when cold, makes a great noise when pushed, it really growls but when warm it does boom a little. Did first long journey today and it was acceptable, not too tiring but I am interested in the dynamat solution, does it really work? do I spend £30 to lag the boot and which type do I use? The standard rubber type or the gooey tin foil coated "Extreme" version? (Appologies for hyjacking thread but I did offer information first!)

Hi Doofus,
Yep, I've done the same as you're talking about on my '95 WRX.
When I got the car it had SS downpipe, centre and BB, and it was LOUD. In fact, I actually had it up on ramps to see if it was blowing because it was just silly. It wasn't just that it was loud - nothing wrong there - but it wasn't a particularly nice loud. Just harsh.
So I whipped the SS back box off and put a Scorpion we had lying around on instead.
Huge improvement. Still sounds nice - good deep burble and plenty of action when i nail it - but the sound is nowhere near as intrusive as it was.
My business partner has a similar setup with a Magnex box instead. If anything it sounds even better.
Go for it. You'll not be sorry. Oh, and it makes damn all difference to power as far as I can tell
