Upping the boost a tad (part 2) ..

I thought I'd start a new topic for this one as the last one started to get into FCD's etc .. which to me says upping the boost LOTS not a tad
Anyhow I said I'd report back after having a Dawes Device fitted.
I have an MY00 (801 ECU though), SS DP+BB with OE centre .. and now a Dawes
It took about 5 mins to fit and would take about 5 mins to take off
and return the car to standard boost control
Boost gauge shows that I am getting 16 - 16.5 PSI peak with 15 - 15.5 PSI held tailing off at the top end (TD04 characteristics).
Turbo starts to spool up around 1800 and I am getting about 10 PSI at 2500, up to 16.5 PSI at around 2.8K.
Subjective impressions .. it's like adding the downpipe again. As reported I would hazard a guess at 10-15 BHP and 20 lb/ft torque gained.
I actually thought that what the Dawes would do (as well as upping the boost a tad) was to widen the torque curve again so that I was getting say 10 PSI at 2K revs. I wouldn't say that this has happened. I would say that the downpipe made more of a difference to getting to boost further down the rev range.
Still compared to standard where things were just starting to happen at around 3K the difference that the DP+Dawes made is startling
For 40 odd quid it really is a no brainer as long as your sensible with monitoring + boost control.
Hope this helps those considering it ...

Doofus,
Ta for the info. I'm considering a Dawes at the mo. although I'm not sure what gauge to get, as I don't want to start cutting wires/soldering as the cars only 6 months old. Do you know if there's one that plugs directly into say the engine diagnostics? (Sorry to deviate your thread).
With the Dawes I guess you definitely feel the reduced turbo lag then? That's all I'm really bothered about..I'm not after massive power hikes, just more useability of already avialable power..

Tony,
I would reccomend de-catting if you hven't already... Not sure how well a dawes will run with restrictions in place!

Scotsman will vouch for the instant change on an otherwise standard car
Of course he started with a dawes and not has a full-decat, TEK3, etc......it's a slippery slope all right

Tony, I have any MY02 and am getting the subaru WRX boost gauge fitted over the weeknd. Its 118 quid + the vodka and tonic. It matches the interior and sits on the steering column. This is the only gauge you really need unless you wanna start modding to the 300bhp mark.

Tony,
I'm not sure about fitting boost gauges (I had my dealer do this)
so can't answer your question about this .. I'm sure somebody reading this thread will though .. I was also looking for a fatter torque curve rather than an outright high revs BHP gain.
If you want to cut your lag I would suggest that a decat downpipe is what you are after. I had already decatted before adding the Dawes so not sure what the Dawes on it's own would do to reducing lag.
From what I've read on here and I-club having a decat DP helps to lower EGT's which an MBC like Dawes can raise considerably.
All I will say is the drivability of a standard car does not compare one with DP+Dawes. You can keep under 4K revs and make swift progress without really trying

fitting a boost gauge sould`nt require any cutting of holes, just depends on where you want it fitted. very simple to fit any monkey can do it........ i did it
find nipple on manifold, take off blanking plug place vacume hose on nipple, feed hose through bulk head into foot well and route into possition of gauge, find aporiate power source (i tapped into *** lighter) and wire it and plumb it up. simple
hope this helps
regards mike

a boost gauge is a peice of p155 to fit,
if you go for the autometer gauge, you will need a small peice of extra tubing. the tubing supplied with their gauge is too small for the maniold nipple.

Whats the standard boost that the My99 Uk cars run at? I too have a DD on my RB5. As you say its like adding the DP again. Its made a massive difference to my car and it now feels like a rocket
I was thinking about taking all my mods off the car though as i drove a friends standard UK last night and it was 10 times smoother than mine. Mine now feels kinda jerky when lifting off during fast driving. Perhaps its my dump valve? My turbo now sounds like its really working can hear the spoolup and then just a constant loud pssssssssssssssssss......followed by a whoosh when i change gear.
Is it normal to experience a big increase in the noise from the turbo after dawes fitment?

The standard boost is 14 - 14.5 PSI for UK MY99. That was what Delta Dash showed on my standard car prior to putting the Dawes on.
I'm not sure if I noticed a difference from the Turbo when the DD was added - think I did.
I've taken the Dawes off now and running a Tek from JB and the car does feel very smooth.

I've never run my car without a dawes so not totally sure but using the dawes with the Tek3 seems to work we'll, the brutality is retained a little better and boost is always very consistent in any weather. Don't let this worry you though cause it's mapped to be safe at that boost level for hot-weather.

Yes, well worth getting a Dawes on John's map
Get hold of one from Jamie and give it a try, if you don't like it you can always sell it on here and only loose a tenner or so. You will like it though
I've done several hard runs on mine now logging on the delta dash and not seen any knock correction atall

Cheers guys Think I might send off for the Dawes after all - though saying that with the cold weather up here now (well, in the mornings anyway) I'm getting boost peak at 17.5 It does go down a fair bit in hot weather though.
Nope - I like extra bits in my car so I'll pick one up
I guess I'll benefit a lot more once I get the decat downpipe on as well (when pennies allow).
Richard.

I got the standard version fitted ... as HarryBoy said I didn't think I'd notice the 'race' version.
Have had a chance to have a run with it now. Initially I though that the Dawes hadn't made much difference to low down pull but you do actually notice a difference (if you're not too busy staring at the boost gauge).
I was more worried about part-throttle driving, thought I'd end up with no boost/16 PSI boost on/off throttle control. That's defo. not the case .. if fact if you drive normally and control your throttle well you don't even need to see the extra boost.
I think the 1.5mm bleed sorts this out, it's very progressive.
It had made a BIG difference
Up to 80 or so bananas the thing just goes wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee !

i've just ordered new gauges from jamie (autometer lunar) and was planning to add a dawes after. the thing im not sure about is a short while ago my dealer upped my boost by putting a larger regulator in but this gave me severe overboost at 70+ so they had to tone it down.so would the same not happen with a dd?
p.s. i already have a s/s d/pipe.

Hi there everyone...
I was thinking of buying a Dawes device for my MY94 WRX and was wondering if it would be worth it?
I am running about 1/1.1bar at the moment on a Prova ECU but the Fuel cut out is at 1.2bar I think. I had a problem with the bosst last year and kept overboosting at about 1.2bar so thats how I know. I have also bought a Dawes AFR Meter and the light always shines blue for good mixture and loads of fuel.
I don't want to run the boost on the limit as it may cause overboost at certain times.
Has anyone bought the Fuel Cut raiser and is it any good?
Thanks
Scott

By gum this little thing works well
Put it on, set it to minimum, notice the throttle response then notice what I'm running: 8PSI.
Tune it up in four goes, and I'm just below the Fuel cut. Hopefully. Otherwise I'll find I need a new windscreen.
Cheers to all (john, harry boy, everyone) for teh instructions and advice.
