I tried the dawes on my 01 WRX,at first it seemed good, but after about a week the car seemed to loose some of its smoothness and
started to become a little jumpy and hesitant. It seemed to me
that the ecu wasnt happy seeing full boost so low in the rev range so it decided to mess things up.After taking it off the car was much more pleasant to drive, the only thing i missed was the extra punch when overtaking in high gears on the motorway especially when i first fitted it.

That's because you should match the operation with a different wastgate and why not a dump valve. The wastegate also prevents the turbo from cracking in presence of higher boost pressures

Interesting.......... so why dont they tell you that when you buy one of these things?? Has anyone else had similar probs or experiences particularly on MY01+'s ??

Because some people are more interested in the immediate cash than the loss of time in STUDYING the principles of an internal combustion engine ( that would also generate higher revenues in the long term)!

In trying to get my car to run more smoothly I drilled the bleed
hole on mine out to 2mm,which did actually work but the performace
increase over standard was mininal, definatly not worth invalidating both your insurance and your warranty for,so my dawes is not really of much use.

I just thought it ought to be said, as the Sole UK & European Distributor of Dawes Devices, that we are in it for the long term and give full recommendations online and over the phone if we are asked to give advice or opinions on a subject I have made my job.
If we were simply in it for quick cash, why would I take the time to help out people who haven't even bought a Dawes off us but bought it second hand? I don't mind doing this, in fact I think of it as an extra value adding service, although obviously no short term profits are made!
It is generally assumed that the customer knows the implications of fitting this or any other boost controller, and it is expected they are used sensibly and correctly.
We have had no problems using the Dawes Devices on any of our cars, including Imprezas from MY93-2002 STi's.
If you have experienced problems are you sure you have the correct 1.5mm bleed hole, rather than the 0.5mm? Also have you checked to see if the Device is clean inside and around the bleed hole?
Caronte, please explain your reasoning about the wastegate and the dump valve, I am genuinely interested in knowing more especially about the dump valve! Mainly because I would make a lot more short term cash from selling you a wastgate and dump valve! (JOKE)

As far as I am aware I was the first one to fit a dawes to a MY01 towards the end of last year.
My findings can seen posted on various dawes threads since last year, not leaast my setup recommendations linked from the dawes faq (kindly put together for the benefit of all by Mr. Banks!).
In comparison to the ECU controlling the boost it can feel a little twitchy until you get used to it. The 1.5mm bleed hole definately helps this, and also it is essential, as Jamie suggested above, to check the inside of the dawes is clean and free from contaminants if you feel it is not functioning correctly.
Also, please do not lose sight of what the dawes actually is. It is, basically, a brass valve with a spring. It is not an all singing, all dancing computer re-map, and, at the cost, it can hardly be compared with one.
However, it does do exactly what it says on the tin. Boost will build more quickly and be held longer- and at a higher level if required. If you take a little time to set it up properly (and sensibly), and a little more time to get used to it, it really is the performance bargain of the decade!

Jamie,
do you speak italian or do you have somebody you know that can translate it into English?
I've got a couple of articles from a very proffessional magazine called "Auto Tecnica" that could be very interesting to you.
Let me know

Some figures from Well Lane yesterday:-
267 bhp, 262lb torque : )fueling was fine - no det
16.5 psi held - could have gone to 17psi but didn;t get time
MY01 with scoobysport full decat + dawes + optimax + 1% NF
Boost was fluttering - don't know if I have a problem with the dawes - flat spot at 3500rpm
Regards

Can anyone help with this problem? - boost is fluctuating all over the place - checked the boost on a professional gauge - 16.5spi - but the needle is flickering up and down all the time but gets to 16.5 psi - this reading is taken at the front of the car (by the maf - don't know what this area is called) - when the boost is measured at the actuautor - only seeing about 11psi - and it's still fluttering madly. When not using the dawes the boost still flutters but only reaches about 12 psi held when measured at the front.
Someone has told me the diaphram in the actuautor may be knackered - anyone had any similar problems?
When driving the car - the flucuating boost can be most felt at 3500 (max boost) - when getting to 6000rpm+ it seems to have uniform boost and no hesitation.
I've got graphs of the dyno run which may be informative to anyone to see the fluctuating boost problem.

Dario,
if you bring it up to southport i'll run a the OBD software on it and the tecjtom to check you're getting a true reading.
