MY93 WRX bottom intercooler pipe burst
#1
Guys is there anything on the market that I can replace the bottom inlet intercooler hose with. I`m running a Grp N WRX with only 1.2bar boost and it keeps bursting the flexible bit. Spent the whole rally yesterday with no boost, still got 3rd in class though!
Prodrive used to supply an alloy pipe but not anymore. Any help would be great.

Are you using SAMCO hoses ?? If not then contact Rally Design in Kent. They'll supply intercooler silicon hose kits. I'm having the same problems with my road going WRX.

the plastic piece doesnt come off does it? I would make the later model intercooler fit if I were you, then get the mrt alloy pipes or fabricate your own.

The bottom hose is fixed to the intercooler by 3 10mm bolts, the remaining part is one piece with a flexible ribbed section in the middle, this is the part that blows. We cut out that section and replaced it with a silicon hose, however the heat then melted the plastic ends of the original pipe and we lost boost again. I can`t see how the silicon hose sets off the shelf would help unless they replace that entire pipe i.e from turbo to intercooler or do they?
I might fit the later intercooler, has anyone done it and what parts will I need?
I would prefer to use the early type in keeping with the Grp N regs.

maybe its because the car has a harder life on the track possibly have a word with a alloy fabricator to make you a alloy end that bolts to the intercooler then join it to the samco hose?
oh side sills turned up just after i mailed you the other day excellent once i had cleaned the ton of mud off them and removed your attempt of free advertising thanks again mate at shop being painted as we speak.rob

Andy,
The SAMCO kit slips onto the turbo exit then is jubilee clipped together. That rigid black hose is then cut after the bellows effect part. You still require the black part that bolts to the intercooler. You'd then hacksaw off the part of black pipe not required (leaving enough for the silicone hose to slip over and seal) then secure with clip. Bolt back onto intercooler and thats it. If Dave can sort you out with an alloy pipe then all the better. If he can, I'd like to hear of the results.

Cheers Caz, that does help, the only problem being we did much the same thing yesterday and the end we cut still kept melting, it could be due to our car running anti-lag, i`m not sure, however if the intercoooler end of it was in alloy that would solve the problem. I will get the Samco hose set though.
Cheers

Hi Andy
If you fit the late intercooler, you will also want to fit the late bonnet and late headlights, as the scoop position will not work between the different shapes. If you can get a cheap bonnet, its worth doing as the later intercoolers are a lot bigger and a lot more efficient. These have alloy elbows to receive a Samco type hose. You can just about squeeze the bigger intercooler in between the throttle body and the bulkhead.
The alternative is to get an elbow and flange made for your i/c and then get a piece of custom made Samco to plumb it to the turbo.
The last alternative is to find an STi 1 or 2 intercooler, which already has alloy end bends.
