Exclamation

The original Legacy Turbos use a chargecooler.

Their bonnet scoop is used to direct air over the hot turbo to cool it.

I assume Subaru found some benefit to making the intercooler air-cooled or they wouldn't have changed it. Mind you saying that, any one else would mount an air-cooled intercooler in a decent air-flow!

Andy F made a chargecooler I think but last time I talked to him he was thinking of going for a front mount instead.

Pace Products make bespoke chargecoolers, check out their website.
It's a good way to go, but there's a lot of work involved with pumps and gear needed.

Yes, the benefit is in using one part instead of about 10, making it shed loads cheaper to use an air/air IC.

And with the same logic ( not really ) Toyota went from a ( crap ) intercooler on the ( crap ) ST185 celica, to a Chargecooler on the ( not just quite as crap ) ST205 celica, which did have considerably more power, although its a completely different engine really too.
Cost has more to do with subarus changes I believe, and considering the number om imprezas they have sold, it paid off.
The celica probably moved to a chargecooler, becasue it was better, and the ST205 was a very limited production run, and a £30k+ car.
Still, I think a good sized front mounted intercooler is better every time.
