Question

Anyone had a problem with a misfire with igniter blocks.

Car is MY99 STi. Done 50k miles, had a problem recently with low down misfire - new plugs - NGK PFR7Bs, idle is now good - but sporadic misfire on high boost - 1.4bar plus.

Checked all connections, plugs gapped at 0.7mm, checked injector plugs - running out of ideas.

Any thoughts anyone?

You may have seen Im asking for higher poer coils, as getting a missifre on mates car over 1.7bar. It is using the coil per plug setup, and were thinkng the std coils are just a bit tired, and just cant cope. Using 25 thou gap, so if it cant spark that, then more power is needed. Someone mentione a small bosch transformer coil, which would need remote mounting Bosch MEC 723, as fitted to a couple fo Jap cars ( in Oz ). Im gonna order some, and see if they fix the problem. They are pretty cheap anyway, at about £15 each +postage, + VAT etc.

Run the engine in complete darkness and open the bonnet, have a look for any sparks in the engine bay. If you see any you might have dirty leads, covers etc.

Probably wont find anything, but it's quick and easy.

I think so, www.ingram.com.au. I will phone em later to see about ordering. I have already been in email contact, but Im not emailing credit card details.
Im going to buy 16 to try. 4 on mates legacy, 4 for mine, and 8 for me granada, so it should see if they are worth while.
Granada doesnt really need them, as I have a Crane CD system, but its still using a dizzy to distrubute the spark. I'd rather have no dizzy at all, but not sure if I could be bothered re-wiring everything to suit the multi coil setup. We'll see anyway. I'll let yas know what happens after I phone them.

I asked before too, what does the likes of the HKS twin power igniton thing thing do??
Would a simple upgrade for iginiton be, to slip in a transformer to up the primary voltage ( LT side ) to more than 12 v. The crane system I have I think uses a few hundred volts on the primary side AFIK.

David close the plug gaps to 0.6mm and then check if its still happening, if so it could be the igniters but also the plugs as the PFR7B's have twice the electrode area compared to say the HKS Iridiums and hence a lot less spark density. If they were what you were running before (NGK's) then test is still valid.

as a thought.

Bob,

will try that - did have HKS Iridiums in until this week - they have seen much better days and my source of extremely cheap Iridiums has gone (£9 each )
