What makes a 94WRX faster than a 94UK
#1
A 94WRX is rated at 240PS a 95/96 WRX is rated at 260PS, and a 94-96UK is rated at only 208BHP.
Other than the fuel Octane in Japan being 100RON, what makes the WRX so much faster than the UK version.
The Boost of a 94WRX and 94UK are very similar levels, so is it just down the the ECU Map or are there other factors to take into account.

I reality a standard uk car is more like 220-230hp rather than the 208hp spec.
wrx 240ps = 235.2hp
jap cars have no centre cat, 100ron fuel allows more ignition advance.

Less weight
Lower gearing
More aggresive cams
Better flowed heads?

Paul, I'm not too convinced on your figures there. When my car (UK MY94) was dyno'd with just a ScoobySport centre and backbox it made 215bhp and 201lb/ft on PowerStations rollers so I'd say a standard UK would be closer to 208 as stated.

hmm, well I looked at the large selection of results on the dyno site, I didn't see a standard car with less than 219hp. Results from unmodified early cars are few, but here's a selection from Powerstation, which gives lower results than PE, which give later standard cars 230hp.

Dave,
I've been on track with many a WRX when the only change to my car was the exhaust, as mentioned above, and I can assure you that they certainly weren't any faster than mine.

According to the specs from the Haynes Subaru manual (not the workshop manual) The early wrx's have a slightly higher compression ratio than the uk ones so this might make a difference and mine has no centre cat either, just a cat shaped straight through box???

Dean,
that's very impressive for only 13psi on PS' rollers, that should see you with 300on PE's
Scott,
the differences are very very marginal on the road and only come into any real benefit when run on 100RON fuel as intended. Technically I think your only looking at the compression ratio and a more aggressive timing map.
If we're talking about standard cars the UK will be by far the quickest, the WRX will be limited to 112mph

Shorter gearing on WRX allows the engine to be on boost the whole time, and early TD05 turbos will sing all the way to the 7k red line
Driven properly a WRX will be quicker purely by virtue of it's gearing, while turbo/engine mapping allows power to increase virtually all the way to the red line.
De-limited WRXs will rev-out at approx 145 - 150 mph

Dave, the UK cars also have the TD05. OK so I know the speedo will be out but I've had mine way off the clock (160) at 6500rpm with only a ScoobySport exhaust and running .95bar

FUEL & BOOST MAPS
UK94 FUEL
WRX94 FUEL
UK94 BOOST
WRX94 BOOST
I can show more if needed.... from owning a WRX93 for 6 months and now a UK94 (with Mods). I can say that the WRX certainly revved better above 5,500rpm. So I would think they have different cams. Although the gearing may of had something to do with it.

the uk boost map cuts the boost over 5800rpm, the wrx doesn't
cams might be different, but I think only the Sti 1 & 2 had different cams. If you look at Andy F's dyno sheet, you can see the power begins to drop from 6300 despite boost being held (operator cut back throttle too making it look worse than it is).
