Just interested to know the differences engine wise between the two..

My aging Phase 1 (MY96 UK) will at some point I am sure blow it's top..

At this point what will fit from the Phase 2?

Is it an EJ20T?

Do only WRX's have closed decks, I understand the exact fitment to what is not really know.

Do only the closed decks have oil squirters?

I understand that the Turbo inlet is a different angle but would my TD05 bolt to a phase 2 engine and solve this problem?

Would I want a Phase 2 engine or should I stick with a Phase 1?

Just assuming I would be able to get a phase 2 secondhand with fewer miles on than a phase 1..

Intention would be to fit the engine and then rebuilt my own either to fit and sell the secondhand motor or to sell mine on or keep as a spare.. depending on funds at the time.

Do the gearboxes mate together fine? I assume all the engine mounts are in the same place?

Thanks for any help in my quest for knowledge! I'll try not to get too along the way.

Phase II is slightly stronger as the thrust bearing on the Phase I is in the centre of the crank - with the Phase II it is at the clutch end of the crank.

The heads are interchangeable - so in theory you can put a Phase II short engine into a Phase I car and vice versa.

The Phase II gearbox also has more attachment points to the Phase I block and so gives a more rigid connection and makes the gear case more rigid.

Oh, and there are no Phase II closed deck blocks - only very early Phase Is or certain later Phase I specials. With a Phase II wire ringing and uprating the head studs (ARP 14 mm ) can help keep all that boost in!

Other more detail stuff you need to speak to Pat or Mark (R19KET).

if you want a closed deck block, go and get a legacy turbo (still EJ20T) engine, they have them, like mine.
they do have oil squirters too.

oh yeah, just bolt the td05 on to solve the angle problem, although front entry is best if you can get a turbo too.
