I've had my first scooby (MY98 turbo - fully UK standard) for 2 weeks... can any of you fine people suggest the first 'must have' upgrade? (I'm not talking 'serious' tuning here).

Thanks in advance...

Hi Paul.

Two main choices IMHO - either a new downpipe or a Dawes Device with a boost gauge.

My first mod was a Dawes - and was very pleased with the results.

Richard.

Definately the downpipe and a backbox, some would say the brakes on a 98 as they are pretty poor.

downpipe, boost gauge, dawes

98 brakes are I think 4 pots, in which case, discs and pads (not EBC) are probably a good thing afterwards.

If you want that exhaust note, the 'must have' is the backbox Then I would uprate the brakes, especially if you have 2pots. I wouldn't bother upping the power until/unless you are used to a 200+ BHP car. Also ditto with the handling. Once you are used to the characteristics of the scoob then uprate the suspension.

Enjoy!

If you are talking about non-drive train mods as well, I would suggest changing the agitated glowworm foglamps to some more useful Cibies/PIAAs. There's more clear nights than there are foggy nights!

Then you can see to test the tuning mods at night

I'm now going for brakes, followed by suspension, followed by engine/exhaust stuff (for insurance reasons)

Depends what you want to achieve:

If you want to stop quicker upgrade the brakes;
If you want more noise then get a louder backbox;
If you want more power then decat downpipe or full exhaust, ecu, boost controller etc;
If you want to improve the handling, bumpsteer removal / uprated suspension, tyres etc;
If you want to improve appearrance, new wheels, spoiler etc.

There's a lot you can do and a lot of people who have done all or some of the mods who will give you lots of help and advice. So decide what you want to gain from modifying your car then go for the mods that make it happen.

Thumbs up

Thanks for all the advice guys... I think it may have to be a Back Box. Nothing TOO LOUD though, and I don't wanna lose that lovely boxer sound. Is the Magnex 3 1/2 inch a good price/performace buy? Any suggestions on others?

Cheers

Paul

Couldn't find a better value box myself so i bought one. It makes all the right noises, without being too loud. A fine looker to!

LOL - loose the boxer sound? you can only just hear it when std Changing the headers to equal length looses the boxer sound (and thats not always the case), any exhaust change post turbo will do it justice

Did I say brakes

PS I have some 4pots, discs and pads from my P1, 2000 gentle miles only, exc condition. Upgraded to AP 4pots, so they're not doing me any favours sitting in a box in my garage. Only £300 to you... Let me know
