Hey all,

I could really do with some advice,

I have owned my STi5 Type R now for just over a month and whilst tootling down the road (at approx 55mph) I heard a knocking noise..... I was on my way to Barnton anyway (residence of Warrender) so I pulled in there and asked the mechanics to have a listen to it. They told me that the 3rd Crank bearing had gone and that it was a common fault.... the STi 5 being the weakest of the STi engines and the STi 4 being the strongest.

Has anybody ever had this happen to them ? Luckily my car is still under warranty, but I just know that the Garage that I bought it off are gonna at some point try to swindle some money off me for something or other !

What is my legal right here lads 'n' lasses, can I demand that I have my money back for my car or do they just have to fix it under warranty ?

And to think, I was in love with my car too, now if I can get my moooola back, i'm contemplating getting something sensible like a Golf TDi PD or something !!!

Cheers all

Scott

There are loads of posts about this, seems to happen on a daily basis to someone or other. You should do a search on 'Big End No 3'. I seem to remember that they only go once, and are OK after being sorted out.

If your car is under warranty and you get it sorted for free (ish) then why get rid ? A Golf will not be the same !

Edited cos I can't spell !

If anything, the older engines seem to be more reliable. I have seen a lot more MY97 onwards sh1tting big ends, than early cars.
STI4/5 whatever, they all go. I have 3 STI4 engines in my garage which were bought for the pistons, all with big ends gone.
