H, looks like bad news ! I cleaned boost solenoid and all pipes leading to wastegate etc with brake cleaner. Cleaned the MAF sensor, checked all hoses (all fine)and even disconnected battery to see if reseting ecu (presume this will reset ecu ?) had any effect but no. Car still poorly (

Just incase any one else has experienced similar probs - symptoms are - starts fine, no check engine signal etc, ticks over fine, dawes afr flickers as normal, pull away ok aslong as no high revs used, as soon as revs reach 3000 - 3500rpm (approx)and boost about 0.3 - 0.4bar car starts to judder, makes rough sounding notes from exhaust (like as if engine is missing or if being starved of fuel)very light black smoke leaves exhaust (as if running too rich)dawes afr bright blue without having WOT, as soon as you let off large rush of air sound and engine back to normal (apart from some slight popping from exhaust ocassionally whilst ticking over)My exhaust does seem to be notceably sooty, but not 100% sure if it has got worse since problem but it does seem very black.
If anyone has any ideas at all or has had similar symptoms, please can you help me !!
Where is John Banks when you need him ? John any ideas ?

Kind regards,
Steve

Does anybody now how expensive these items are ?
And is there any disadvantage in buying second hand if you can get hold of them - apart from possible length of life span of items.

Where is best place to buy ? Second hand or new.

Cheers for help in advance
Steve

I think yours was a MY96?

I think these were hot wire type MAF, these can normally be cleaned, but the later my99 onwards? had hot film type MAF, these I know are about £70. Thats if you can get hold of it sensor only.

Unsure on the wastegate, never bought one. But shouldn't be that much, about or under a £100?!?!

wastegate is part of the turbo, but you could replace the 'wastegate' actuator.

get them both second hand... 20 - 30 for each I would expect.

I used spray brake cleaner on my hot wire MAF. Took the whole assembly apart so I had just the plastic tube with the sensor in and sprayed it through the gauzed end so that high velocity particles didn't brake the sensor. (Probably me being over cautious, but MAFs are fragile.)

Mine's worked well ever since

Are you saying that you can't make boost ? Check all the turbo/intercooler pipework, sounds as though its way rich but lack of boost could mean just a massive air leak, include dump valve in the checks.

To check the maf, just unplug, this forces the car to run off the map sensor, it will idle like a dog but if so then the maf is possibly still ok if, when you plug it back in it idles ok. If there are no codes then its most likely an air leak.

Just sounds to me like its the MAF, my old MY99 did exactly as you described above and it was the MAF. If disconnecting the battery to reset ecu doesnt it have to be for more than 12 hours so the capacitors have chane to clear?

Just unplugged MAF sensor while engine was running, car nearly stalled but then came back and idled the same as it did with the MAF sensor in. The check engine light obviously came on, when I re-plugged MAF sensor back in car again nearly stalled and then came back to idle. Both times the idle was reasonably stable at around 1000rpm with the occasional blip - is this a sign that MAF is gone and the car is already copeing on the MAP sensor ?

Looks like we might be getting somewhere (fingers crossed !)thanks for all your help and input guys, much appreciated.
If someone could confirm that these symptoms sound like the MAF sensor, then I can high tail it and get one sorted asap.

Kind regards,
Steve

As Bob Rawle said if it idles rough with the MAF unplugged and then still idles rough when plugged back in, its the MAF.

Dont know what the part number is for your age of car, but i am sure someone will tell you if you ask in a new thread. Dont be forced to buy the housing as well, as this turns it from about £70 to £200+
