Hey all,

Just noticed a ticking noise coming from this:

It appears to have been doing so since I sprayed brake-cleaner in the solenoid to cure what I thought was overboost... should this be making an audible tick?

Cheers

Jase

(And God knows what happened to the other post... trying to edit it and got 500 Internal error... appears to be gone now)

Thats the boost solenoid... it will click if you blip the throttle when the car is idleing, but i dont think it should do it all the time....

oh OK I thought the little brass/black thing underneath was the 'boost solenoid'. What is that then?

It is a constant clicking, and is definately related to the throttle/revs and also occurs when in drive as well as idling.

The brown solenoid switches between boost pressure & atmospheric - so the MAP & ECU knows how far your up a mountain & reduces boost accordingly.

I think it takes regular samples at idle?

Mine, however, does not tick *constantly* though.

hmm, definately a constant ticking sound, and related to accelerator travel more than revs I would say, as I can increase the intensity of the ticking by lightly pressing the accelerator, and not increasing the revs.

Any idea why it would do this? Could this be a bad thing?

it could be a dodgy throttle switch. solenoid at the top isolates the MAP sensor to measure atmospheric pressure. It tends to do it when you back of the throttle. If your throttle switch was marginal, it might think you are constantly going on/off throttle, so it measures atmo press every time.

also check you haven't left the 2 green connectors joined under the dash, as these do a similar thing to help diagnose problems.

and are connected for cleaning out the boost solenoid ...

OK, managed to squeeze under the steering wheel last night, and the green connectors are not connected.

So that potentially leaves the throttle switch. Where would I find such a thing?

It's on the throttle body, I wonder if someone has misadjusted your throttle stop i the past.

try just opening the throttle a touch and see if the ticking stops.

Hey Pavlo,

Nah, the ticking actually increases in intensity as the throttle is opened... it goes from been barely inaudible at idle, to a rapid ticking with throttle use...

I have EXACTLY the same problem when the engines hot / after a run.
turn the ignition off/on and it all work again & no tick !
works fine when cold!

There is some adjustment on the throttle position/switch housing.
but not sure why it works after an OFF/ON !!

definatly not ment to tick on no throttle. will usually start to tick when you lightly open it.
