Broken timing belt
How do you mean "broke the timing belt"... are we talking about a bit of damage to the timing belt cover, or are we talking about bits of brick embedded in the oulpump cover? If it's "mearly" a little superficial damage to part of the timing belt cover, you/he might have a chance of the engine surviving to fight another day.
Its not uncommon to lose the engine in a front end smash.
The front collapses and smashes into the cam covers. The wheels break (plastic) or get bent (metal) and the belt either snaps or just falls off. In almost all cases, there is piston/valve contect.
If you are lucky, its just bent valves that can be replaced. If the end of the valve snaps off (STi sodium filled valves are prone to this) then its new heads and new pistons, with the possibility of big end bearing damage.

Might be just as handy to try and source a pair of complete cylinder heads??
