Strange rattle

Started getting an unusual rattle from the engine. I start the car from cold (overnight), no rattle, but after about a mile or so, it appears. Then after another couple of miles it disappears. It's related to the engine revs, as it increases in pitch as the revs go up, but isn't noticeable at below 1500rpm.
If I start the engine after the car has been sitting in the sun all day, there's no rattle.
Anyone got any ideas?
