Apparently the surface texture of the block differs from closed to open, due to the different casting process . You would really need to see them alongside each other to notice the difference though
Run it at 1.8 bar and if the head gaskets hang together on a track day it's probably a closed deck

nope.
I cant say as I dont know myself, but I know that there is a way to tell.
katana is right though, pretty much all the 92/93 cars had them, and if you have them in bits, that also helps, oh, and if its a 22B!

jonny, why do you think I went for an MY93 WRX? I heard somewhere that it had a closed deck block. Besides, I think you have one yourself as its an MY95 right?

katana,
no there are no conflicting views.
I said most 95s arent closed. None of those I have seen has a closed deck.
We agreed on 93s.
as far as telling from the outside is concerned, as we said it is difficult to tell.
need to see them side by side out of engine to know which differences to look for.
I know the finish and webbing is different, but cant say where.

I have never really understood why the closed deck block is so great. Obviously it is a lot stronger than the open one, but I have never heard of anyone cracking a block here? Rods and pistons letting go yes, but never anyone cracking a block.

simon,
i think the main reason for people prefering the closed deck block is its resistance to flex under high boost and temps, and hence less chance of head gasket failure.
cheers
