FAO Nom, regarding Ecutek remap
#2
Nope - no remapping done yet.
I went to see him & we sat on the rollers for a while in 30C with only one fan running & managed to get the ECU to panic a few times . But that was about it - I have a load of other bits going on shortly () at which point it would definately need another remap, so we just left it for now. It's not causing big problems - or wouldn't be on the road rather than with just the little fan - so wasn't really worth doing.
On the ECU 'panic' - after 3-4 runs, the ECU cut the boost to 7psi at around 3,400rpm, we thought because there was some erratic (-1 to -3.5 deg) retard just after the turbo hit around 14-15psi. By erratic, I mean not the odd ping, but all over the place. No errors logged, though. It was nice to see that the ECU pays so much attention to the engine's wellbeing . This was repeatable, exactly, every time. I think that if it had been cooler it would not have happened - and it doesn't (well, hasn't yet) happened on the road.
I've read somewhere that the knock-sensor can't distinguish between ordinary noise & knock over 6,000rpm, so am keeping it below that. Just in case . The ECU seems to be paying enough attention to not worry too much below that! Merv didn't seem overly concerned, just amazed at how much the intake reduced MAF readings/leaned the mixture.
Umm, thinking of anything else possibly of interest, we also checked the MAF & replaced it with one of the new ones as the readings were so low. The replacement gave the same readings, so they 'should' be as low as I'm getting (the original MAF is fine).
Last thing I can remember was that we were getting about 280bhp, which wasn't bad for 30C ambient & the limited tuning I have. That's 10bhp more than at the last run I had there which was around 15C. Obviously it running so lean adds a fair wop of power, though...

Actually, a turbo may well be on its way next; although I decided I would stop short of that a while ago, can't see that decision staying very long Spot a recurring theme
I think the oem turbo is going to be about as effective as an asthmatic whistle after I finally get everything fitted.

Nom,
Thanks for that m8.
I too am thinking of getting a larger turbo, either a VF23 or VF 28/29.
Let us know how you go cos I will probably need to send my ECU to Ecutek to get a similar map to yours copied to my ECU. Unless I decide to go over to them personally.
Cheers,
Wrexy.

Hi Wrexy,
I will be on the dyno on Monday for a Unichip Remap with the new APS SR-30 turbo.
Perhaps that's a turbo which is worth to consider when replacing yours.
I'll let you know about the results
Frank :-)
