I've had a recurring problem with my 94 WRX for over a year now. It keeps giving a fault code 22 but replacing the knock sensor has not fixed it. (I have also tried the MAF & MAP sensors)
This weekend I tried an ECU sourced from Grade A. The replacement had different numbers on it but I thought I would give it a go anyway.
With the original ECU the symptoms are that the engine has a fault code 22 straight away on startup. Reving the engine makes the light go out (whilst its cold) but it comes back on at idle and when it warms up it stays on. Generally the engine runs rough and misses a bit.
With the new ECU the fault light is on straight away but the engine runs smoother. The light does not go out on reving. I have elected to go back to Grade A and see if they have an ECU with the correct numbers and will try that.
Does anybody have experience of a persistent knock sensor fault?
I would be willing to pay someone who could confidently sort the problem out.
Give me a call on 07774 826446 (I can return calls without a problem) if you can help.

Is the wire ok that runs from the knock sensor to the ecu... I squashed mine when refitting the gearbox after changing the clutch
