power steering pump

Hi all... im gonna change my power steering pump tomorrow, getting one from grade A salvage at around £100. Jus wanted to know, how difficult is it to fit it myself? anything i should know before doing it so that i dont mess it up. Thanks in advance,

The only real problem you'll encounter are the tensioners for the belts, just make sure they're properly spaced and tight, but not over tight! Also, be prepared for some skin'd knuckles and a few choice words getting the ****** back in

Hi,
I have a MY94 WRX and I have problems with my power steering pump/reservoir. It keeps leaking all over the place and whines.
I have replaced the Rubber seals and resealed the Reservoir.
When I look in the bottle the fluid is fizzing!!!!
Is it best to get a replacment one from a Grade A ?
Shall I get another MY94 one or upgrade to a MY96 ?
Best Options....

Hi there scott,
When you say you’ve replaced the rubber seals, I take it you mean the O rings, there’s 1 on the reservoir stem(into the pump), and also 1 under the reservoir cradle which you have to take out as well.
When it’s fizzing, it usually means there’s a leak somewhere, if you’ve done both of the O rings, then get someone to put your car on full lock whilst running, and look at the right hand side, to the back of the pump(right as you’re looking down on it). You should see a wire (sensor) going into the pump, sometimes it leaks from here, and with your car on full lock it will squirt out everytime you put it under load.
This is what happened to ours, and we got a pump from grade A. However, this wire can be replaced, also needs a gasket, will set you back around £60 for the wire and gasket inc vat, you can get them from subaru dealers. Certainly check this wire before you get a pump, as it’s a lot cheaper, and you can DIY if you have a little mechanical know how. Replace the O rings again, just to make sure the res fits snug, and also check the cradle bolts, to the pump, cos’ if these are loose, there won’t be a decent seal, and fluid will pour out.

Okay thanks for that will change the O rings again.
The ones I got weren't Subaru ones just some I found that fit.
Subaru do not sell these without the whole pump!!
Will take it off and give it a good look over at the weekend.
