Anyone had this done on a UK MY96 or similar? What sort of increase in BHP can I expect with a downpipe, centre section, back box and ITG Panel filter? (from reading previous posts do I automatically deduct 50BHP from the figure given by PE?)

What exactly do you get for your £650.00 and is it worth having.

Cheers

Chris

Power Engineering Phase One Conversion: Not something I would recommend from personal experience. This conversion caused me two engine failures.

They do - the problem (it seems) is with the old 'mapper', not the actual 'phase 1 conversion' bit of kit - it only does what the mapper tells it to do. The current 'mapper' is Mervyn, who is one of the best. Ask anyone with the EcuTek stuff.

Nom,

Actually, I tracked an intermittent engine shutdown (as in engine turned itself off at random intervals for random periods!) problem to a badly installed phase one hardware board... so it was not _just_ the map at fault in my case, despite at least 5 separate "mapping" sessions in an attempt to stop the car detting.

I am glad that everyone has so much confidence in Mervyn and his mapping skills, I have heard good things from people whose opinion I trust. I would suggest you find out who you will end up dealing with if anything were to go wrong with the conversion before putting your money down because, in the worst case scenario, this is the person you need to trust to sort the situation out fairly and honestly. After all, you wouldn't want to end up with an engine that has been "rebuilt" using low specification incorrect components to a yeild a lower specification then when it left the factory, would you?

All this talk of engine detonation sounds rather worrying.

If I don't go down this route, are there any other options available for a slight increase in power?

Given the length of time the scooby has been around, thought there would be loads of "reliable" engine/mapping products around.

Thanks for comments so far.

I have a MY98 with PE phase 1, T75 downpipe, ITG filter but standard exhaust. Whole lot done by previous owner sometime late '98 (not sure whether Mervyn was there then?). Since then the car has done 60+K miles. Checked recently by Merv for occasional overboost and readjusted for 18psi held. No deting, exhaust gasses all clean. Passes MOT with centre cat only. 256bhp and about the same torque. Previous owner ran a Scoobysport backbox which gave 276bhp. (PE figures)
