Red face

I was driving around last night and I stopped for half an hour to get some shopping. When I got back in the car, I turned on the engine and after the standard ignition noises there was a funny grating sound followed by a very quiet knocking, coupled with the rev's dropping to 400-500! This only lasted for about three seconds and then everything went back to normal. [btw - It was not a cold start, I had been driving for almost an hour before stopping]

The engine has been fine since and I'm not sure what to do.

Does anybody have any idea what this could be?

Is it a one-off?

Should I consult the dealer?

The car is an UK MY00 + PPP, no other Mods.

Please tell me if you know anything because I need to know if this could be serious (still 10 months left on the warranty).

Thanks in advance.

Question

What kind of driving were you doing just before switching it off and how long did you let it idle before switching it off?

Unhappy

Nothing particularly out of the ordinary. I was just going around town. I might not have let the engine idle for as long as I normally do, but I hadn't been using the boost as most of the driving involved 30mph zones and junctions galore!

Is it serious or a well known problem?

Talking

Dunno, if you answer had been, canning down the motorway followed by zero idle time, it would have made more sense.

I will keep an eye on it and if it starts to happen regularly I'll be off to the dealers.

Thanx.
