as above every cone fiter iv`e fitted to my old cars ie cosworth, fiesta turbo, escort turbo, golf VR6 all had cold air feed pipes but my MY99 does not has any one got a 57i K&N filter with one the power gains and noise are great but i was just thinking if a cold air feed would help further cooler charge temps!!!

There is an APS version which sits in the wing that people seem to rave about, but some cars end up a bit lean. Changing your intercooler hoses may reduce your charge temperatures depending on who you believe. Replacing the turbo with a bigger one is also very effective.

Ken,

Nice bit of ally work, is it home made ? If not where did you get it from ?

You do have cold air feed situated in the wing, which would have fed the air box.

Blitz have just delivered the first of it's type in the country (for my car) of their new cold air kit.

Believe me I will be posting as much info as possible on here in the coming weeks as Im sure it will be a big seller.

We are also making our own kit very soon, similar to the APS, but made from carbon if costs allow.

Yes it's home made, make a template up from cardboard them, once happy, cut it from ally.

Cold air duct is that flexy tube that halford etc. sell for the job, made a hole in the brake cooling duct and fed it inside the wing, where the old resonator used to be.

Also opened up the bonnet vent to help the air flow through.

I've changed the vent to a scoop to feed cold air to my induction kit:

Question

Stuart, doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose, shouldn't the vent, pull the air out, rather than force it in ?

I would think that all you are doing is holding the hot air in.

Vent as standard has a backing plate, so therefore is cosmetic only, so me thinks forceing air in is cool!

Probably get shot down in flames for this, but I've never been convinced of the benefits of doing this. I've run such kits on previous cars. On my old MY00, I ran everything from standard airfilter, K&N, ITG and HKS with and without the resonator and cold air pipes. The fact is that once you are moving the air flow across the engine bay will be little different in temp to that drawn in by a 'cold air pipe' either through the wing or from under the front spoiler (this was reported ages ago on this site). The only time you could see a benefit would be at low speeds where there is restricted air flow in the engine bay. But at these speeds I guess you wouldn't need it.

Personally I'd save your money. If you are intent on doing it, remove the resonator in the wing, get yourself a piece of flexible aluminium hosing from Halfords, bend it into a rough 's' shape and fix it inside the front wing where the resonator normally is. Air flow can be directed directly up onto either a panel or cone filter. Cost you about a fiver

Exclamation

Chris L is correct.

I did some measurements a while ago with temp sensors at the bumper and at the air box. While stationary there is significant difference as you would expect but as soon as you get more than about 10mph the differential is 1-3 degs (and this could be measurement uncertainty). At stationary positions there is no gain from a cold air feed as there is no air movement anyway.

I would say the main gains from cold air feed are next to nothing and only encourage water ingress IMHO. The sectioning off from the engine bay arrangement, may aid i/l temps from standing start very slightly but would not solve heat soak into the i/c.

Wink

David, you must mean 'for the crashed look' like all those daft Supras

I'd bet that the extra drag would outweigh any performance gain.

The blanking plate comes off with 4 nuts, but if you check the angle of the fins/slats you will see that it extracts the air from the area, not force more in, would be better imho with my sort of set up.
