Default Which gearbox to upgrade to??

Impreza classic turbo 2000 year 2000..I have burnt out 2 boxes in a year...ty754vn1aa must be crap. Has anyone upgraded to a better stronger, sensibly priced,no faff installation box without taking a 6 speed route???

Sounds like the problem is with your driving style.

Dont use the gearbox for slowing the car down, use the brakes.

You say burnt out....do you mean stripped gears or selector or bearing failure. What power and torque you running through it...

First one had a whine in second which went higher pitched with the revs..put another one in, this one has had a whine in third between 1500 and 3000rpm....and is getting slightly worse since i put new tyres/adjusted tyre pressure....approx 280bhp...

I would get your box rebuilt properly as the easiest option...secondhand ty7541aa are all 15 years old now...they will all be past their best..280 bhp should be ok for a 5 speed used sensibly. STI box is a nice upgrade for a uk car ..ratios are better if you like A to B sprinting. Still got acceptable top speed. You will need the matching rear diff for the sti box as well. Easy swap too.
Or a 6 speed... I just converted my classic. If you source a uk 6 speed you will just need..box with clutch fork..rear rubber gearbox mount..bug sti prop and 6 speed complete gear linkage. Straight bolt in job.Everything else you have fits.

Full box rebuild would be how much?? Any ideas? That seems a very sensible route to take....

Depends how bad the box is really. API could quote you.. im guessing £600 -800 for a comprehensive overhaul.
