Asked and answered before. Apologies for asking again:

Who regularly gets 1 or 2 Greens on their KL while accelerating with WOT? Also, at which rpm range do you get it?

I find my car (JDM STI7, std engine and exhaust) sometimes gives none, sometimes 1, sometimes 2 Greens with WOT. Sensor on manifold, max sensitivity. Most typically, the Greens light as it hits max boost around 4000-4500rpms. It can go from none to 2 Greens suddenly. Just wondering if this is some sort of mild-det which is occurring, which the OEM knock sensor listens for, picks up and uses to retard the timing.

I've also heard that forged pistons give more noise, which leads to a more active KL, when compared to cast pistons. Any truth in this?

tks.

I have my sensor mounted on the block under the intercooler, full sensitivity and I get the same as you, but at around 5500revs onwards, sometimes none, sometimes one, rarely two, but has happened, on a MY00.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Is yours a 220hp Turbo?

The high rpm "noise" I'm not so concerned about. Its the 2 sudden Greens that happen at peak boost around 4000rpm that got me thinking.

Yes it is.

If your lights on the Knocklink stay on continuous in those revs and don't flicker, it's fine.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Well, let's say in gear 2, WOT. I get 2 Greens with max boost at 4000rpm (sometimes! sometimes even none) which stay on for probably a second and a half or two seconds. Then it drops back to one Green (again sometimes, but this is what I noticed today).

After changing to 3rd or 4th, I may get 1 Green at high rpms (>6000) and very occassionally 2 Greens. But these will be the "background noise" type of Greens, rather than the peak boost (@4000rpm) type of Greens.

Re-reading the instructions that came with the KL, it says that "Greens are normal and an indication of background noise". But it also says that "a sudden rise in the LEDs means that the engine is det'ting". Mine is a sudden rise in the Green lights (only), which is kinda in the middle here...

Anyway, I know someone else who's about to install the KL on his MY01 JDM STI also. So we'll prob compare notes after.

Anyway, Pete Croney (tks man!) has answered before, saying that the KL is a proven bit of kit that lights up light a christmas tree at the slightest hint of det.

I think we're ok with 2 Greens then...

Yes, Pete Croney was the one that had said about the 2 greens being OK and on constantly, without flickering.

Well I saw my big red light, light up like a christmas tree only once when I was with Mervyn from PE, while he was here and we were testing Delta Dash. I had turned up the boost a bit too high, for a test, but never again.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Ping: Pete!

Was that what you said? I can't recall.
What do you think of my 2 "sudden Greens" on WOT with full boost @ 4000rpm?
Engine and Exhaust standard, JDM MY01 STI RA.

Cheers.

I had usually two greens at 4-5000 rpm WOT, but only momentary (spikes) and sometimes the first orange (MY00 PPP)!
Once I had all the lights on, which scared me, but after I changed the headers with PE equal length exhaust manifold I use to have only one green... I always use SUL98 and OB.
For me two greens is normal engine noise on full boost.

Thumbs down

Tell me Alfa Romeo 33 with bigger engine...
Do you remember this sound?
JIM

Forgot to mention that I lost more than 1 psi boost pressure (and before 3-3200 rpm more than that) and turbo reacts later! I don't know if this is due to air leak from the manifold but now I hit easily the rev limiter as the car is like non aspirated.
