TBH you may aswell spend the hour or so to put the centre cat back on. No worries that way.

They are clamping down big time. My mates got a garage and he has just bought a piece of kit worth about £25K that will soon have to be used by all MOT testing centre's (apparently) and he can't put me through now, as it is all computerised. Not sure on full details but basically he can't do it for me.

However, someone else I know said they used a garage that if you showed you had the CAT in the boot then they would just put a another car through the emissions test.

I believe power engineering at uxbridge have a twin centre cat which they fit for mot time. I think they just charge an hours labour to borrow it.

Also, if its a pre 8/95 import then cats are not needed as there is no exact match in the DOT database.

I too can help out on that score, as I have a twin cat center for the standard joints on Impreza classic's.
The new MOT clamp down is because its all going on-line with the ministry, to reduce fraudulant mot's or if thier certificate book is stolen then they wont get registered with DVLA and as the post offices are also online to the DVLA then you cant get Road Tax. You then get reported to the Police for a stolen MOT cert.
The emissions test is also linked to the online computor and if the emisions dont match the required test results then it fails, so using another car will become awkward, so either we will start changing cats back to standard or replacement center sections will become very popular..

I have also heard that the emission levels have become stricter which obviously means changing the standard centre section over might not be enuff any more. Might give power engineering a call...

i just told mine that the engine was out of a 1990 legacy (pre-cat)?
made a false recipt for engine so i never need a cat test
and it also says on my mot no cat test needed.
